Phillips the son of Thomas Luther and Lula (Dobbs) Phillips was born October 10, 1934 in Kirksville, Missouri. Dr Phillips, famous for starting all his classes and speeches with the phrase "Hello World", has said goodbye on March 26, 2011 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of 76 years, 5 months and 16 days. Dr. Phillips taught school for 50 years, with 25 years being in Missouri and 25 years at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Well known for his love of music, history, life and politics, he was a much beloved professor and often ran into a former student while enjoying his love of travel, once even as far away as Egypt. He served in the Army in the mid 50's and was in the U.S.Army Band and Bagpipe corp. He has enjoyed many other honors such as being an Inaugural Centurion at NSU in 2009, awarded Teacher of the year and Faculty member of the year in 1983 Governors Award in the Humanities and National Association of Humanities Educators award for Outstanding Humanities Educator in 1982, and a Presidential Appreciation from President Bill Clinton. He also served as the choir director for the Presbyterian Church for 17 years. He was a member of the National Historical Society and helped to ensure that several of the homes in the area were added to the registry. He served as Secretary Treasurer of the NSU Educational Foundation Board of Directors. He also enjoyed playing on the computer and visiting with just about anybody, especially if they were willing to talk politics. Ronald touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Lula Phillips and his brother Thomas Phillips Jr. He is survived by a loving family which includes his wife of over 50 years Lou Ann Phillips of the home in Tahlequah; his son James Ronald Phillips and wife Sonya of Arlington, Texas and 2 grandchildren Lola and Drake Phillips also of Arlington, Texas. Many students, friends and other relatives also survive him. Memorial services will be held Wednesday March 30, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Tahlequah, OK with Rev. Alan Snyder officiating. Services were entrusted to Hart Funeral Home in Tahlequah, OK. In lieu of flowers, please honor him with donations to the National Endowment for the Humanities.
