In Vermillion, Monday, 29th, inst. of consumption., Dr Samuel Lyon, aged 40 years, 4 months, and 2 days. This brief announcement will carry surprise and sorrow to many hearts. Dr. Lyon was born in Hardiston township, Sussex county, New Jersey, 40 miles from New York City, December 18, 1833. He lived on a farm until he was 17 years old, when he left his home and relatives and moved in Morrow county, Ohio, where he remained several years and attended school considerably during the time. From Ohio he removed to Jasper county, Iowa in the spring of 1836, where on Christmas of that year, he was married to Miss Mary Hill of that county, by whom he had two children, the first a girl who died while they lived in Iowa and the younger a boy, who with his mother survives him, and are still residents of this town. He lived in Iowa until 1860, when he came to this town, where he took a claim, upon which he lived some four or five years, carrying it on income for with the practice of medicine, which he had come in need to Iowa after receiving his medical education in Keokuk. Some nine years ago, he moved into town from his farm where he has resided ever since and with the exception of occasional visits away, to see old friends, or on business, he has been a constant attendant upon all calls for him and seen every day by all the citizens of the town. He started the first drug store ever established in town which he continued to run until his death and in which he had previously added a line of dry goods, groceries, stationery and school books and associated himself with Mr. I. M. Macomber, a partner who still continues the business. We have lost one of our most valuable enterprising and energetic citizens, Pure in his private life, honorable and honest in all his dealings, always strictly temperate and closely attentive to his business, prudent and careful in his investments, he leaves behind a handsome future for so new a country as this. If at any time he had any differences with others, it was because they were not inclined to deal justly, as he was, and this town and county could better have spared many other than him. His public improvements still stand, as a monument to his enterprise and speak more loudly in his praise than any word that can be written or said by any body. Sweet be his sleep and peace to his ashes.
