Description	:	Son of Samuel and Philena Hazen Ladd. At age 10 he attended a classical school in Windham for three years, later attending Plainfield Academy and Ellington High School. In 1864 he joined the US Navy, serving until the end of the Civil War. He returned to the farm of his father at Franklin for a short time, and moved to Hartford for employment. In 1876 he attended the medical department of the University of New York, graduating in 1879. He practiced at Hartford, Portland, and Putnam, Connecticut as physician and surgeon. His wife Sarah and son Frederic moved to Providence, Rhode Island and later to Virginia where they died and are buried; there is a cenotaph for her at Pautipaug Cemetery.
