Her parents were William John Peyton, a pharmacist, and Margaret E. Adams Peyton. She attended Crisfield schools and graduated from the high school here in 1912. Read More	Sarah Margaret Peyton, Physician Dr. Sarah M. Peyton was born in Crisfield, Somerset County, Maryland, on December 29, 1895. Her parents were William John Peyton, a pharmacist, and Margaret E. Adams Peyton. She attended Crisfield schools and graduated from the high school here in 1912. In 1916 she received her B.A. degree from Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland, as Phi Beta Kappa. For the next year she studied at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. After teaching school for three years, she decided to enroll in the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, from which she was graduated in 1923. Her internship was in the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Peyton began her practice in Crisfield, Maryland, in 1925. She also worked with the Playground Athletic League of Maryland for one year in giving physical examinations to high school girls. For several years she was the examining physician for female entrants at Salisbury State College. She was a charter member of the American Academy of General Practice and in 1973 was a Fellow of the Academy of Family Physicians. This Fellowship is an acknowledgment of the successful completion of 600 or more hours of accredited continuing medical study. In 1940 she was named citizen of the year by the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce. She received an award in 1970 for her humanitarian and faithful service to her community for nearly fifty years from the city officials and Kiwanis Club of Crisfield. She was selected the outstanding senior citizen of Somerset County in 1971 by unanimous choice. Recently Dr. Peyton received a fifty year medal from Johns Hopkins Medical School for fifty years of general practice. Dr. Peyton was selected to appear in the 1972 edition of "Personalities of the South" honoring America's leaders in recognition of past achievements, outstanding ability, and service to community and state. A short biography of Dr. Peyton has appeared in several editions of "Who's Who of American Women," the latest in 1974-75. She has been a member of the staff at McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield, since 1925 and was chief of staff for many years since beginning the practice of medicine she has been a member of A.M.A. For her fifty years of service in the medical field she has been named a member of the "Fifty Year Club of American Medicine", and received a certificate of merit from the American Medical Profession for this honor. The Sarah M. Peyton School for the Retarded in Crisfield has been named in her honor. She was president of the Women's Civic Club of Crisfield for two terms. It was through her planning and motivation that the Helen Campbell Memorial Health Center was built. Dr. Peyton has always been a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, a trustee, a member of the official board, a member of the United Methodist Women, and a Sunday school teacher. For several years, she has been a member of the Maryland Historical Society, as well as a member of Maryland Society for the Preservation of Antiquities. She is a member of the Walters Art Gallery and has traveled extensively on ten of its tours to Canada, Great Britain, western and central Europe, and the Mediterranean countries of Europe and Africa. The many honors which have been accorded her are only a small tribute as compared to the affection and esteem felt by all of those who have benefited from her unfailing devotion and service to her community.
