PEYTON DIES AT HOME HERE SUNDAY AFTER A LONG ILLNESS Prominent Druggist Passes Away Last Sunday ONE OF CRISFIELD'S LEADING CITIZENS A pall of gloom was cast over this community on last Sunday when news was broadcast that Mr. William J. Peyton, one of Crisfield's most prominent and respected citizens had succumbed to a complication of diseases at his home on Main street this city after a lingering illness. He had been in failing health for the past several months and had submitted to medical treatment on numerous occasions in an attempt to regain his health, but without avail. He was 64 years of age. Born at Fishing Island in Somerset County, when a boy he moved with his parents to Crisfield where he secured employment at the age of fourteen as a drug clerk, in the establishment of Hall & Atkinson, then one of Crisfield's most popular drug stores. He later studied pharmacy and was graduated as a pharmacist. After a few years of devoted and loyal service he was taken into the firm as a partner. After the death of one of the partners and the retirement of the senior member of the firm he took over the business, which since has been operated as William J. Peyton and Company. He had been successful in this line of endeavor for the past fifty years. He was a man of unusual intelligence, well read, and possessed a quiet demeanor. He had at all times a good word for his fellow man, and was one to whom many appealed for good advice and wise counsel. His straightforwardness, honesty, and congenial disposition made for him a host of friends who mourn his loss. He was a devout christian, and was a member of Immanuel M. E. Church, an institution with which he was affiliated for a good many years. He was a member of the Masonic order, a past President of the Crisfield Rotary Club, and a former President of the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce. He was affiliated with the Democratic party in the county. He was the son of the late, Sidney F. and Susan Ann Peyton. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Adams Peyton, and one daughter, Dr. Sarah M. Peyton, a prominent physician of this city. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters, Mr. 0. F. Peyton, of Crisfield, Mr. Louis Peyton of Baltimore, Mr. Albert Pepton, of Adams, N. Y., Mrs. W. F. McLeod, of Baltimore, Mrs. William Faucett, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Homes LaMar of Jacksonville, Florida. Funeral services were held from Immanuel M. E. Church on Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. John J. Bunting. Burial was made in the Crisfield Cemetery with Masonic rites. The Crisfield Times, August 31, 1934 pg 1 William J. Peyton's death certificate says he was born on Fishing Island in Somerset County, MD, son of Sidney F. Peyton of Pocomoke City, MD and Susan Ann Powell of Bridgeville, DE. He was listed as a pharmacist in a drug store. His daughter, Dr. Sarah was the informant. William Peyton's marriage record to Margaret Edith Adams (3 Oct 1894) was recorded in Immanuel M.E. Church records.
