In his administrative capacity as family physician he became intimately known throughout the territory he served. Back in 1896 (December 23) Dr. Cate ushered into this world a little son to cheer the happy parents of a Nelson home; on tomorrow afternoon Albert Klawitter will conduct the service ushering this long-time friend into the Great Beyond. The funeral is to be from the Methodist Church at 2:30 Friday afternoon. In conducting the service the local Pastor, A.J. Rich will be assisted by Rev. Jason A. Adams of North Loup, a brother-in-law of the deceased, who will deliver the sermon. Cate Life Sketch of William Andrew Cate On December 6, 1859, William Andrew Cate was born to Callaway and Susan Cate, near Moravia, Iowa. He was one of thirteen children. The family moved to Nebraska in 1873 and homesteaded near the present site of Holbrook. They crossed the Missouri River on the ice near Brownville. Their means of transportation was the histroic covered wagon drawn by four mules, followed by a few cattle. Those were the days of heroic adventure. Nebraska was in the making. The lure of the West was drawing heroic men and women into the new country. Frontier boundaries were being pushed westward with each recurring day. The Cate family shared in the spirit of that day and sought to make their contribution to the times. On the way to Holbrook, when near to the present site of Elwood, they met a band of Pawnee Indias (sic) fleeing from the bloody Sioux who had attacked and massacred the Pawnees in that historic engagement in what is now known as Massacre Canyon near Trenton. Undauted by that Indian slaughter they proceeded south and westward and settled on a homestead near Holbrook and began at once to make for themselves a home in the new country. When William was seventeen years of age his father returned to Iowa, where he contracted pneumonia and died, leaving the family in the West without the support and guidance of a father. Upon William's shoulders fell much of the responsibility for the care of the mother and younger children. For some time he drove a stage coach from McCook to Oberlin, Kansas, during which time he met and became acquainted with Buffalo Bill. After some time the family moved farther East and lived near Exeter, finally settling near York. In the heart of young William was a growing conviction and desire to make the practice of medicine his life's work. Without money he set about to make the educational preparation. He sold farming implements, windmills, book and Bibles with which to earn the money. That determination was finally rewarded when in the spring of 1892 he received his diploma from the Hahneman Homeopathic Medical College in Chicago. He first opened his office in Clay Center, but a fire destroyed his office there and he located in Nelson, August 10, 1893. From that time his practice centered in and around Nelson, with the exception of six years when he was employed as consulting physician by the Munsell Mineral Food Co. of Lincoln. On October 15, 1895, he was married to Miss Nora Belle Hoover of Michigan who was then teaching in the public schools at Nelson. To them were born three children: William Forrest, Homer D., and a daughter, who died in infancy. Dr. and Mrs. Cate were members of the local Methodist Church, where she taught in the Sunday school and was active in the Missionary Society. She passed away on November 5, 1921. On April 3, 1924, he was married to Miss Alma J. Schafer of Nelson who shared with him in the joys and sorrows of the later years of his life. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two sons and one brother, N.B. Cate of Scottsbluff; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Fair of Grandview, Wash., and Mrs. Ella Moslander of Redlands, California; six grand children and many friends and distant relatives. Rich presiding. Rev. J.A. Adams of North Loup, a brother-in-law of Dr. Cate, preached the sermon. Mrs. W.L. Portwood, Mrs. Ross Clem, Arthur Reeve and W.C. Hall furnished the music.
