He was born December 13, 1915, in Bynum to the late John Plato and Lizzie Mae Kimball Griffin. He graduated from Durham High School in 1934, attended Wake Forest and the University of North Carolina, and graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1941. Dr. Griffin practiced dentistry in Toccoa, Ga., from 1941 to 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during World War II until 1946, attaining the rank of major. He practiced dentistry in Durham from 1946 until 1988. Dr. Griffin was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society, American Dental Association, the Dental Advisory Committee for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of N.C., and a charter member of the Butler-Ross Dental Study Club. He also served as past president of Durham-Orange County Dental Society, Third District Dental Society of N.C., and the N.C. Unit of American Society of Dentistry for Children. Dr. Griffin was a part-time clinical faculty member of the UNC School of Dentistry in the mid -1950's. He received a Special Award from the International College of Dentists, North Carolina Chapter, in 1992 for "service to the profession, community and fellow man." A former member of the Durham Jaycees, Dr. Griffin had been a member of the Exchange Club of Durham since 1952. He served on the Durham City Council from 1991 until 1999. Dr. Griffin was a member of the board of trustees of the Durham Child Guidance Clinic and Durham Cerebral Palsy Foundation for a number of years. He was a member of the Durham Technical Community College Board of Trustees from 1974 until 1994, serving as chairman of budget and finance committee for 17 years. He also served as past president of Hope Valley Country Club and the Seniors Golf Association. He was selected as one of Durham County's Fathers-of-the-Year in 1961. An avid sports fan, he had a passion for tennis and golf. Dr. Griffin was past president and charter member of The Century Club, a dance cotillion. He was also a member of the Toppers and Beaux Arts dance clubs. Dr. Griffin was a charter member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the vestry. He was a member of the Faith Alive team as well as a basketball coach. Dr. Griffin is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Uzzell griffin; nine children, 25 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mozelle G. Sutherland and Doris E. Griffin of Durham.
