A multi-talented, charming lady, Lib was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. William Kimball Griffin, a retired dentist and former city councilman in Durham. A multi-talented, charming lady, Lib was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. William Kimball Griffin, a retired dentist and former city councilman in Durham. The daughter of Major William and Louisa Cox Uzzell, Lib was born on January 29, 1917, and spent her childhood years in Chapel Hill, where her parents owned and operated the Pickard Hotel and Lib appeared in Carolina Playmakers productions at UNC. Twelve years later the family moved to Durham. Lib graduated from Durham High School and then graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 1938 with a major in Art. She also studied creative writing at UNC-Chapel Hill. Lib taught art for several years, then became a wife and mother of nine children. She was a columnist for The Durham Morning Herald for 15 years, authoring a weekly column called "Lib on Life." She authored two books about her life as a parent and wife—The Pains and Pleasures of Parenthood and The Mirth and Misery of Marriage. In 1986 her first book won the National Presswomen's Award for the #1 inspirational book. Lib was a charter member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and President of the Episcopal Church Women. She served on the Episcopal Church Women's Board for two terms, was the Patchwork editor, and contributor to The Communicant. A charter member of the Alliance of the North Carolina Dental Society, she was President and Vice President of the organization and never missed a state meeting for 47 years. President of the Durham County Republican Women for two terms, she also was a PachyDurham columnist. Lib served on the Pines of Carolina Girls Scout Board for two terms. She was a member of the National Federation of Presswomen and the North Carolina Federation of Presswomen and an active member of the National Speakers Association and the Carolinas Chapter of the organization until her death. In 1988 she received the UNC-Greensboro Alumni Distinguished Service Award. In 1991 American Mothers, Inc., selected her as the North Carolina "Mother of the Year." In 1992 the North Carolina Constituent of the International College of Dentists recognized Dr. and Mrs. Griffin for their dedicated service to the dental profession, community and fellowman. The Thelma Neff Distinguished Service Award was presented to Lib in 1994 by the Alliance of the American Dental Association in recognition of her leadership in the dental community and contributions made to the Third Component Alliance. Lib Griffin was an avid UNC Tarheel fan, an artist, an exceptional ballroom dancer, and a member of Hope Valley Country Club for many years. She is survived by her seven sons and two daughters and their spouses, 21 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.
