Description	:	DUWAINE L. BIRDSALL Duwaine L. Birdsall was born July 6, 1932 in Berthold, North Dakota. His family moved to Sweet Home, Oregon, where his father, Sam worked in a lumber mill, and after losing an arm there, built a dairy farm. Birdsall was born July 6, 1932 in Berthold, North Dakota. His family moved to Sweet Home, Oregon, where his father, Sam worked in a lumber mill, and after losing an arm there, built a dairy farm. They moved to Prosser, Wash., where Duwaine raised pigs in 4-H and won a train trip to the 1947 national convention in Chicago. He played football and won a league boxing title at 148 pounds. Duwaine enlisted in the Air Force, where he made road trips with buddies from the base in Mountain Home, Idaho, followed by service in Morocco, where he worked on planes headed toward the Korean Conflict. Afterward, he studied electronics at Perry Tech in Yakima, and married Shirley Jewel Barber on June 27, 1958. They worked at Boeing in Seattle, hated the rain, and moved to Idaho Falls, where Duwaine worked in a nuclear reactor. He left in 1967 to run Birdsall & Son Dairy in Grandview, Wash., with Sam for 10 years. Then he and Shirley moved a few miles to grow grapes, asparagus, apples and plums. He was among the first farmers in the Yakima Valley to plant Fuji apples. Duwaine also hired himself to other farmers during harvest, when he operated his grape-picker machines, with help from brothers, Lloyd and Glenn. They enjoyed holiday meals and pies cooked by his sister, Dorothy. On their 25th anniversary, Duwaine and Shirley fished in Idaho. He hunted pheasants and turkeys. They retired in 2003 and moved to the pine hills north of Spokane, where Duwaine enjoyed watching bison and moose. He succumbed to pneumonia Jan. 6, 2016 at a memory-care home in Spokane Valley. His wife passed away in 2013. They are survived by son Doug of Scappoose, Ore., his wife Jeannie and their children Lacey and Cody; daughter Denise Lindblom of West Seattle, her husband Mike and their daughters Claire and Rose; and son David of Spokane, his wife Leesa and their sons Loren and Steven. A memorial service was held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Prosser, with a reception to follow. Published in Tri-City Herald on Jan. 12, 2016
