Description	:	Shirley J. Birdsall, age 79, passed away in Spokane on March 28, 2013. Shirley was born in Prosser, WA on April 10, 1933 to Loren and Vada Barber. After Vada died in 1943, Loren married Vada's relative Ida Offield. Her siblings are Dorothy Bloxom of Sandpoint, Idaho, Duane Offield of El Cerrito, Calif., and her brother Don Offield, a volunteer firefighter who perished in a rollover crash, while fighting a grass fire above Prosser. Birdsall, age 79, passed away in Spokane on March 28, 2013. Shirley was born in Prosser, WA on April 10, 1933 to Loren and Vada Barber. After Vada died in 1943, Loren married Vada's relative Ida Offield. Her siblings are Dorothy Bloxom of Sandpoint, Idaho, Duane Offield of El Cerrito, Calif., and her brother Don Offield, a volunteer firefighter who perished in a rollover crash, while fighting a grass fire above Prosser. Another brother, Gordon, died from measles as a child. Shirley married Duwaine Birdsall, an Air Force veteran and fellow Prosser High graduate, on June 27, 1958. They lived in Idaho Falls, then moved home to run a dairy farm outside Grandview, before moving to raise concord grapes, cherries, hay, and apples. Shirley worked full-time at Benton County Courthouse, then at Champson-Lampson Insurance. She home-cooked nearly every meal, often wearing a light-blue apron vest. Her scalloped potatoes, cowboy cookies and pineapple cake were a hit. She smiled often and listened even more. Later, she and Duwaine moved to the pine hills north of Spokane, then into the city. They enjoyed road trips to Prosser and Sandpoint, Id. Despite cancer and other ills, she smiled often her last year, especially during visits from children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Duwaine Birdsall of Spokane, WA, son Doug, his wife Jeannie of Grandview, their daughter Lacey and son Cody; daughter Denise and her husband Mike Lindb lom of West Seattle, and their daughers Claire and Rose; and son David, his wife Leesa, and their sons Loren and Steven in Spokane. Says Leesa: "My ever joyful, never complaining, tough-as-nails, precious mother in-law, Shirley. Her middle name is Jewel, and that is what she was. What a gift that I never had one of those "mother in-law" stories to tell. This woman was a friend and another mother. I loved her and will miss her greatly." A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the East Prosser Cemetry under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory.
