He died on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at the age of 54 years following a long battle with cancer. He was raised in the Bruce and Estelline area, graduated from Estelline High School in 1965 and then Dakota State College in 1969. Dwight was united in marriage to Renee Schneider July 5, 1970, at Oldham, SD. He was a member of the Preston Christian Church where he served in many capacities. He referred high school football and basketball games, taught school and coached in the Hamlin School District and was athletic director, coach and teacher in the Estelline School District. He also farmed in the Estelline community and at the present time was employed by Community Insurance at the Bryant State Bank. Dwight also served as the Athletic Commissioner for the American Legion Post of Estelline and was the Past Commander. He was elected to the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Control, serving from 1992 to 1996. He is a past member of the Estelline Community Oil Board and was presently serving as a member of the Estelline School Board and the Opdahl Farm Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors. February 12, 2002, was named Dwight Kinney Day in South Dakota when he received an Executive Proclamation from the State of South Dakota. He also received many other awards during his short lifetime. Dwight also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and all athletics, his family and his granddaughter. He is survived by his wife Renee of rural Bruce; one daughter Jolynn Haberling and husband Dan of Bryant, SD; one son Lee Kinney and his wife Kristin of Onida, SD; one granddaughter Emily; his mother Letha Kinney of Estelline; four brothers, Russell and his wife Rebecca of St. Germaine, WI, Robert and his wife Janene of Cavour, SD, his twin brother Doyle and his wife Terri of Clinton, OK, Kurt and his wife Karen of San Diego, CA; two sisters, Colleen Dietz and her husband Lyle of Eyota, MN, Claudeen Kinney of Tulsa, OK; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Medford in 1986. Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family at the Estelline American Legion Hall following the committal service at Hillcrest Cemetery. Geise Funeral Home – Estelline, South Dakota
