Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hope Church, where the Dubuque County Fire Association will gather at 6 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements. He was on born Dec. 3, 1954, in Sioux City, Iowa, son of Francis and Janet (Mell) Hudek. He graduated from Loras College in 1976. He married Karen Nicol on Jan. 24, 2006, in St. Lucia. Dan was a captain with the Dubuque Fire Department. He started with the Fire Department in 1986, serving most of his time at Station 6, serving as a paramedic and driver of car 8. He also was a real-estate appraiser for Felderman Appraisals, worked on the Sundown Mountain Ski Patrol and was a volunteer with Hospice of Dubuque. Dan was so beloved by his family and friends. He showed us all how to live a life pleasing to God. He displayed a positive attitude throughout his life; he was always ready to give advice or help out a friend. With his trust in Jesus and his endless hope, Dan found the strength to fight this terrible disease. He served the Lord and knew there was a plan. We prayed for a miracle, but knew that if God called Dan home, God would say "well done, my good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23). Dan was sent to Earth with many lessons to share, from the unconditional love he gave his family and friends, to his infectious smile and his upbeat personality. He was an amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend. His loyalty at the Fire Department demonstrated his strength and courage, which was equally displayed during the past year and four months during his battle with cancer. For the rest of our lives we will celebrate the memories that Dan gave us as he made his lap with the firefighters during the Relay for Life. We need to thank God for sharing Dan with us here on earth, and praise Him for the promise of eternal life with Dan for all who believe. Surviving are his wife, Karen Hudek; seven children, Nathan Hudek, of Ft. Lewis, Wash., Matthew Hudek, of Dubuque, Angela Hudek, of St. Louis, Mo., Kristi (Ty) Kleiner, of Dickeyville, Wis., Dustin Nicol, of Hartland, Wis., Casey (fiance, Thomas Downs) Nicol, of Rochester, Minn., and Susan Nicol, of Dubuque; five grandchildren; his mother, Janet Hudek, of Pocahontas, Iowa; three sisters, Becky (Ed) Dewey, of Pocahontas, Karen Zeilske, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Donna Schultz, of Spencer, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Hudek; and two sisters, Jackie Hudek and Carol Halder.
