He had been sick five weeks with influenza and complications. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Sutton funeral home. Rev. George Mitchell, pastor of the First congregational church, will officiate and the Masonic lodge will hold services at the grave in Memorial Lawn cemetery. Knights Templar and the American Legion drum corps will attend in uniform. The casket will be open Sunday and until the time of the services Monday, at the funeral home, but will not be open during the services. Earl Becker was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and came to Emporia with his parents when he was five years old. The Becker home was at 603 Rural. He attended the Emporia grade and high schools and the College of Emporia and was graduated from the Teachers College in 1915. Mr. Becker began his musical career in 1900 when he joined M.C. Grady's boys' band, and he played a cornet solo at a concert of the Second Regiment band in 1902. He soon became a member of the Second Regiment band and his advance in music was rapid. July 3, 1916, Becker enlisted in the Second Kansas Regiment Infantry under command of Col. P.M. Hoisington. Becker, who signed a contract to teach in the Arkansas City High school, served on the Mexican border until the middle of the school year, when he went to Arkansas City. During the World war Becker was in the navy, stationed at the Great Lakes training school. After the war he taught chemistry and science in the Emporia High school, until he quit to go into business. At the time of his death he operated the Commercial Collecting alliance, with an office in the Palace building. With Becker as director of the American Legion drum corps,the Emporia corps won the state championship in competition at Fort Riley in 1927, at Pittsburg in 1928, at Salina in 1929 and at Wichita in 1931, and in competition at the national conventions the Emporians always had high scores. Becker was known throughout the country as an authority on drum corps. In 1922 the Abdallah Shrine band at Leavenworth selected him as an outstanding cornet player to accompany the band on a trip to San Francisco. Mr. Becker was married to Miss Ethel Brooks on October 24, 1929, in Emporia. He is survived by Mrs. Becker; a son, Brookes Becker, 6 months old; his father, F. C. Becker, of Los Angeles; a sister, Mr. Harry Davis, of Hutchinson, and a brother, Paul Becker, of Pittsburg.
