Description	:	Earl M. Starkey, 96, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, December 29, 1994 in a Buena Vista Nursing Home. He was born in Salem, March 24, 1898, the son of the late Samuel and Julia Williams Starkey. He came to Buena Vista in 1920 with the Blue Ridge Tannery and became manager. He served the company for 33 years. He was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, having served on the Board of Deacons for over 40 years and was one of three trustee having served many years. He organized a Men's Bible Class, which he taught... Read More	Earl M. Starkey, 96, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, December 29, 1994 in a Buena Vista Nursing Home. He was born in Salem, March 24, 1898, the son of the late Samuel and Julia Williams Starkey. He came to Buena Vista in 1920 with the Blue Ridge Tannery and became manager. He served the company for 33 years. He was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, having served on the Board of Deacons for over 40 years and was one of three trustee having served many years. He organized a Men's Bible Class, which he taught for 38 years. He served Buena Vista on the School Board, City Council, the Draft Board, Commissioner of Revenue and President of the Peoples Bank. He was one of the organizers of Virginia International Co.- this company ships large quantities of crude oil from Indonesia, and was one of the organizers of Southern Industrial Associates, Inc. Mr. Starkey was preceded in death by his wife, Marvel Brown Starkey and a daughter, Jean S. Schreiner. Surviving are one grandson and wife, Vernon M. and Betty Schreiner, Wellington, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Christopher Schreiner. Funeral services will be conducted 11 am. Tuesday at the Buena Vista Baptist Church, by the Rev. Dr. Chip Pendleton. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.
