Life-long Creighton resident Bill Stokes passed away peacefully at Creighton Avera Care Centre on the evening of November 15, 2015, with his beloved wife and son by his side, at the age of 88 years. During his entire life, he was dedicated to family, community, God and country. His greatest joy was to serve people in any way he could and he was loved and respected by family and the many friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched. Earl Willard “Bill” Stokes, son of Ray Stokes and Myrtle (Alton) Stokes was born August 22, 1927, the seventh of eight children, in Antelope County, Nebraska, on the family farm three miles south of Creighton. He attended Antelope County District #22 rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Creighton High School in 1945. On August 29, 1954, he was married to Norma Jean LaFrenz at the Center Congregational Church in Center, Nebraska. In 1955, Bill and Jean welcomed a son, Bradley Ray, into their family. In 1959, the family moved from the farm on which he was born, and into Creighton. He operated a mobile feed grinder for Keck Feed and Seed in Creighton. In 1965, he established his own mobile feed grinding business and in 1969, started Bill’s Feed Service, a Kent Feeds dealership, providing complete feed, farm supply and equipment to the Creighton area. Over the course of the next 20 years, the business received numerous sales and customer service awards from Kent and other companies with which the business was associated. In 1989, he sold the business and retired. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, serving above the Arctic Circle in Thule, Greenland, with the Corps of Engineers as it constructed a forward-deployed strategic bomber airbase in the early days of the Cold War. After leaving the service, he maintained a life-long contact with many of the comrades who served with him, attending numerous reunions. In 1974, he was elected to the Creighton City Council, serving three terms, until 1986. In 2002, he returned to Creighton City Hall to serve as Mayor for one term, until 2006. After leaving office, he continued to be involved in the civic affairs of his hometown, and was especially proud of his involvement in the Creighton Historical Society, contributing numerous personal items to the Society’s collection and serving on its Board of Directors for many years. In addition to the duties of his elected civic positions, he was an active participant in many other civic organizations throughout his life. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 1151, serving in various offices including Post Commander, and was a member of American Legion Post 74. He was a member of the Creighton Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years. In addition, for many years after his retirement he took great joy in serving as a school bus driver for the students of Creighton Community Schools. He was a member of Creighton United Church of Christ for over 50 years and served as Deacon and Trustee to the end of his life. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to lead the restoration of the Creighton Rose Hill Cemetery. He and many other volunteers worked many hours to clean and clear the grounds, construct a gate and walking paths and install lighting on the grounds. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean, of Creighton; son Brad, his wife Susan, and granddaughters Allison and Caroline of Frederick Maryland; sisters, Laurine Bartling and Lois Johnson, both of Creighton; sisters-in-law, Margie Stokes and Elaine Darling; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leland, Dale and a younger infant brother, Gordon; two sisters, Marjorie Way and Ruth Klippel; infant grandson, Matthew; brothers-in-law, Don Way, Joe Klippel, and Gale Darling.
