Description	:	Winston Garcelon "Winnie" passed away Wednesday June 15, 2016 at the age of 101 years. He was a descendant of three pioneer families in the area: Garcelon, Rowley and Chapman. He was born Earl Winston Garcelon to Clara Myrtle (Chapman) and Robert Lyle Garcelon on December 12, 1914 at their home in Fortuna, California. He attended Bucksport School until his graduation from 8th grade in May 1929. He then attended Eureka High School where he took woodshop. Read More	Winston Garcelon "Winnie" passed away Wednesday June 15, 2016 at the age of 101 years. He was a descendant of three pioneer families in the area: Garcelon, Rowley and Chapman. He was born Earl Winston Garcelon to Clara Myrtle (Chapman) and Robert Lyle Garcelon on December 12, 1914 at their home in Fortuna, California. He attended Bucksport School until his graduation from 8th grade in May 1929. He then attended Eureka High School where he took woodshop. He was very artistic, making beautiful redwood burl bowls and candle sticks as well as furniture. During the depression he and his brothers would help in the family garden and hunt for small and large game to feed the family. He lived all of his life in Humboldt County except for a time during World War II when he was sent to Morro Bay, California and Monterey, California by Mercer Fraser to work on military bases and docks. He began his career as a carpenter when he was 17 helping to build a house for a friend. He worked Mercer Fraser, Glen Nash and in 1953 he began his own contractor's business, Winston Garcelon, General Contractor. He was involved in the demolition of the old court house in Eureka and took many pictures. He was a Humboldt County building inspector for 20 years and retired at the age of 82. He was an avid hunter all of his life and taught many people to hunt especially his grandsons Ken and Scott, his grandson-in-law Bill and great-grandson Bryan to hunt amongst others. He was very proud of his great-granddaughter Jennifer when she got her first buck. Winnie and his grandson-in-law Bill Reeves were hunting partners for more than 30 years. He met Louise Spencer when they were both working in the Zenia area of southern Trinity County. They were married April 19, 1941 in Reno, Nevada and were married for 72 years. They spent many weekends over the years at the 7 Cedars Ranch, their special home away from home in the mountains of southern Trinity County, where they enjoyed their apple orchard, wildflowers, hunting and just relaxing with their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. They also camped, went on wild-flower hunting trips and have 100's of photos to account for the flowers they found. In later years Winnie became more interested in local history and family genealogy and worked with his cousin Max Rowley gathering information. He is survived by his son Dennis Garcelon and wife Marlena; daughter Juleen "Julie" Reed and husband Donald; grandchildren Marc Garcelon, Sam Garcelon and wife Dana, Mollie Burkette, Ginger Reeves and husband Bill, Ken Livingston and wife Amy, Scott Livingston and wife Rose, Erin Reed and her partner Rebecca McKasson, and Kristen Reed; great grandchildren Jennifer Broadstock and her Rusty, Bryan Reeves and wife Shelby; Avic Garcelon; Brooke and Faith Garcelon; Drew, Brittany and Katey Burkette; and a great-great granddaughter Lori Reeves, on the way. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise (Spencer) Garcelon, parents Clara Myrtle (Chapman) and Robert Lyle Garcelon, sister Lyla Gault, brother Robert Garcelon, sister Geraldine Lorensen, sister Zona Hansen, and brother Keith Garcelon. The family wishes to thank Visiting Angels for being there for Winnie and Louise for many years. They especially want to thank Glenda Hicks who has cared for Winnie and the family throughout. We would also like to thank Hospice of Humboldt for all of the wonderful care and help especially Tiffany, Chris, and Raquel. All of these people made it so much easier on Winnie and his daughter and son-in-law towards the end. There just aren't enough words to thank them.
