Jordan died at his home in DuBois Wednesday morning, Dec. 30, 1891. He was buried Sunday, Jan. 3, 1892, in this city, under the auspices of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in the presence of a large number of acquaintances who assembled from various parts of the county to witness the beautiful and impressive ceremony and pay the last sad tribute of respect to a departed brother and friend. Ben Jordan was born in Lewiston, Me., April 24, 1831. At the age of 14 he went to Lowell, Mass., and engaged as a spinner in a cotton mill. He continued in this business unti 1851, when he made a trip to California by way of the Isthmus, and engaged in mining with moderate success until 1854. In October, 1855, he moved to this county, then containing seven families. He took a claim on Turkey Creek, but finally sold out and engaged in a steam saw mill, and soon found out that he had made a poor exchange as far as profits were concerned. On his failure at the milling business he took another homestead and purchased an additional forty acres, and soon had a farm of 200 acres under excellent cultivation. He always took an active interest in politics and was an active member of the republican party. For a period of eight years he served the people of the county as sheriff to the entire satisfaction of all. He was a member of the state convention in the fall of 1870 that nominated thee late David Butler for governor, and was a member of the legislature of 1876-7 and an active participant in the memorable senatorial struggle which resulted in the defeat of F. W. Hitchcock and the election of Alvin Saunders to the U. S. senate. In 1888 he was appointed postmaster at DuBois. In 1860 he was married to Miss Sallie East, a native of Cass county, Michigan, a lady of Quaker parentage and gifted with the noble attributes peculiar to that religious faith. She and seven children survive him- Mrs. Mary F. Wallace of Madison, Neb., Mrs. Nellie Cruse of Dakota, Mrs. Leoni Wetmore of DuBois, Wm. Jordan of San Luis, Col., and Misses Grace, Jennette and True E. Jordan of DuBois. Mr. Jordan was recognized as one of the leading men of the county- honest, industrious and a good citizen, a desirable neighbor and true friend. He lived in his every day life by the golden rule of manhood and died in the hope of endless blessedness. THE PAWNEE REPUBLICAN, Pawnee City, Neb., Thursday, January 7, 1892.
