Mr. Jewell's illness came on suddenly, but it was realized it was a serious ailment, and he was taken to Lincoln Tuesday, May 2. All medical efforts were of no avail and he passed quietly to his eternal rest. Eben Ward Jewell was born at Canton, Ill., February 22, 1858. He was one of a family of five brothers and two sisters. He came to Fillmore county Nebraska in 1883 and settled two miles north of Geneva, March 22, 1885, he was married to Miss Estelle Van Slyke. Except for a few years spent in Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell have resided in Geneva and vicinity since their marriage. They were the parents of five children, Mrs. Ethel Southard, who preceded her father in death, and Mrs. Eva Wilson of Omaha, Mrs. Dora Bolton of Geneva, Vern of Yakima, Wash., and Vivian of Davenport, who with the wife, survive. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Jewell was highly respected by all who knew him. He possessed a cheerful disposition and was friendly with all who came within the border of his acquaintance. He became a member of the Methodist church in 1889. Through the years he attended services and gave his interest in the church. He was a good husband, a good father and a good citizen. The funeral occurred at the Geneva Methodist church at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday, May 9, Rev. William Kilburn officiating. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal May 11, 1939, page 5
