Collins, 1228 Benton street, lost his life in the Des Moines river while in swimming. The accident occurred at a point a short distance below the Centerville bridge on the east shore of the river. The news of the fatality was quickly phoned to this city by Perry Hartman and L.E. Lillie of the fire department and the police station were first informed. The father of the unfortunate boy was switching in the Northwestern yards and when the news reached the city. Mr. Lillie sent for him to come up town and meet him. As easily as possible he broke the news of the accident and Mr. Collins informed the mother. Mrs. Collins at the present time is confined to her bed with a broken limb and the shock was almost more than she could bear. She was completely prostrated. Eddie Collins was with a party of boys who went down to Oak Park on the interurban car at 8:00 o'clock. Those in the party were Eddie Collins, George Brunton, Edwin IlgenFritz and Bert Crowe. Getting off at the Oak Park they went directly over to the river and proceeded to go in swimming. Everything went well until shortly before 5:00 o'clock when the Collins boy evidently became exhausted and sank. Bert Crowe was near at hand and seized him and managed to get him to a sand bar but the sand slipped from beneath him and he sank again into the river where the current was very swift and the water about twelve feet deep. Young Crowe barely escaped himself from drowning. The others were called and many picnickers in the neighborhood rushed to the scene but it was too late and the Collins boy failed to come up again. A number of Boone people went to the scene immediately upon hearing of the accident and the river was dragged for the body for several hours. Policeman Snedekor, Andrew Anderson, R.L. Jones and John Whalen took a boat and used grappling hooks. It was 8:20 o'clock before the body was found and it was discovered one hundred and fifty feet downstream from where Collins drowned. The remains were brought to this city and taken to the Jayne undertaking parlors. On Monday forenoon they were taken to the Collins residence, 1228 Benton street, where they lay in state until Wednesday morning. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the First M.E. church, Rev. A.H. Collins officiating. Rev. O.H.L. Mason of the Presbyterian Church assisted. The church was filled to its full capacity and the floral wreaths were many and beautiful. The mayor and city officials attended in a body. The pall bearers were the boy friends of the deceased, eight in number, and the remains laid to rest in East Linwood cemetery. A large number of the friends of the dead boy attended the obsequies. The deceased was seventeen years of age and had lived in Boone all his life. He attended the public schools but for the past year has been attending Simpson College at Indianola. Since early boyhood he has shown a wonderful talent for music and gave promise to become a great violinist.
