Sarah Alice Pollard was born October 6, 1862, one of a family of eleven children, and five brothers and five sisters survive her. November 1, 1883, she was united in marriage with Ed Collins and to them were born three bright children, Mary Ellen, Eddie and Emmett. Sarah Alice Pollard was born October 6, 1862, one of a family of eleven children, and five brothers and five sisters survive her. November 1, 1883, she was united in marriage with Ed Collins and to them were born three bright children, Mary Ellen, Eddie and Emmett. When two and one half years old Mary Ellen met with a serious accident, which caused her death one year later. July 12, 1908, Eddie was drowned while swimming in the Des Moines river and on October 6, 1910, her husband met with a tragic death while switching in the Northwestern yards here. The tragic death of her son so shocked and grieved her that she never recovered her health, then the sad death of her husband coming so close upon it was almost more than she could bear. She was prostrated for several days and though she slightly recovered, yet the great grief was too much for her frail constitution. In her weakened condition tuberculosis attacked her and the relatives realized that the end was near. At the age of fourteen she united with the M.E. church and had since been a faithful and consistent member and lived a simple and beautiful life, beloved by all who knew her. The funeral services were held from the home, 1228 Benton street, at 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon and at 2:30 from the First M.E. church, conducted by her former pastor, the Rev. A.H. Collins, of Indianola, assisted by the Rev. Myers and attended by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends, burial beside her husband and children in East Linwood. That the little family may be reunited and happy again in a better world is our eternal hope and prayer. The young son, Emmit (14), thus so tragically left an orphan, is given the earnest and loving sympathy of the entire community. May he ever find a loving parent in his divine Heavenly Father.
