Surrounded by his wife and son, Emmet, his aged mother and other relatives he breathed his last only a few feet away from where the committee was receiving the happy throng of visitors to the hospital for the annual shower. ?---death the remains were removed to the Jayne undertaking parlors and prepared for burial and on Saturday were taken to the home, 1328 Benton street, which he had left in the best of health and spirits that fatal morning, and where they were viewed by countless friends who had known and loved him well in life. The funeral services were held from the home at 2:00 o’clock and from the First M.E. church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. AZ.H. Collins of Indianola, former pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Chas. Myers, the present pastor. The church was crowded with sorrowing friends of the deceased and the floral offerings were many and beautiful attesting the general esteem in which he was held by all. The church choir sang “Nearer My God to Thee,” “Abide with me” and “Going Down the Valley.” The officials and employees of the company attended in large numbers as did also the lodges of which he was a faithful member. The pall bearers were John Kinsman, Ed Kirk, Chas. Smith, H.C. Smith, C.S. Hazlett and F.S. Garner. The remains were followed to their last resting place in East Linwood cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. Ed. W. Collins was a native of Boone county, born in Dodge township, September 20, 1857, and has lived in the county all his life. November 1, 1882, he was married to Miss Alice Pollard, to them were born three children, Mattie, who died in December 1889, aged three and a half years, Eddie, whose tragic death in the Des Moines river, July 12, 1908, had clouded the life of the loving parents with sorrow since, and Emmet, who with the heartbroken mother survives to mourn his untimely death. He is also survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Margaret A. Collins of Dodge township, and one brother, G.G. Collins of Boone. His father and two sisters, Cora and Clara, have preceded him in death. He moved from the farm to Boone in 1888, and worked for a time at the stock yards. In 1895 he commenced working as a switchman and continued in this work until the fatal accident which caused his death last Thursday. Ed Collins, as he was familiarly known to all, was next to the oldest switchman in the Boone yards and was highly esteemed and trusted by the officials of the company and by his fellow employees and his tragic death has cast a pall of sadness over all. He was for several years a member of the city council and by his faithful and efficient service won the esteem and confidence of the entire city; and all hasten to extend sincerest sympathy to the sorrowing wife and son, mother and brother and other relatives. The grief stricken wife has been prostrated since his death, but the love and devotion of relatives and friends are consoling her and it is thought that she will soon be herself again and be able to bear her great sorrow with fortitude.
