Description	:	Edgar A. Torrance was William Sinclair Torrance and Mary Jane Whitcomb's first child. He was born at Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon Territory, on January 17, 1850. He attended country schools and worked on his parents' farm through his late teens. Around 1871, Edgar's parents left Oregon and settled near Colfax in Whitman County, Washington Territory. Edgar joined them and soon set up a blacksmith shop. On June 8, 1871, Edgar married Martha Wright, the first of his three wives. In Walla Walla, Washington Territory, on November 29, 1874, Edgar married Minnesota-born Mary Ettie Phillips. They had four children: Esther, William, Carrie Adeline, and Mary. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to Dayton, Washington Territory, where Edgar built a large blacksmith and wagon manufacturing business. In the early 1880s, he became a serious about farming and raising livestock. At one point he owned a 160-acre wheat farm six miles outside Dayton, as well as 170 horses on a 900-acre stock ranch along the Palouse River in Whitman County, Washington Territory. Edgar's wife, Mary, died January 25, 1904, after they had returned to farm near Colfax, Washington. Mary was only 47. Sometime thereafter, Edgar married the widowed Mattie Elizabeth Norris. They lived in Spokane by the time the 1910 census was written, where Edgar was a real estate agent. They called Spokane their home until his death at age 72 on January 25, 1922.
