The church was not large enough to accommodate the many friends who assembled to pay their tribute to his upright life and character. The great esteem in which he is held was further evidenced by the banks of beautiful flowers which covered the altar. Two of his favorite hymns were sung by a quartette composed of Mr. Clifford Millage, Mrs. Lars Grinager, Mrs. E.G. Anderson and Mr. Herbert Stearns, and "Crossing the Bar," was beautifully sung by Mr. Hogan Iverson. Rev. Kearton in a brief and sincere message, based kupon words of the Apostle Paul, paid highest tribute to the life and character of the departed. At its close a short and impressive service was conducted by the Odd Fellows Order of which he had been a member for a great many years. A large concourse of friends were present at the cemetery where the last rites were conducted by the Masonic Order. The pallbearers were E.J. Straw, C.A. Reynolds, A.A. Arnold, K.E. Jacobson, F.M. Beck and C.D. Tuttle. Edgar Dean was born May 26th, 1851 in Sullivan County, NY. At 16 years of age he, with his father's family, moved to DeKalb County, IL where he grew to manhood. In May, 1874, he came to Lincoln County, SD where he took up a homestead. Returning two years later with his family he made this his home until 1887, at which time he was elected to the office of county treasurer and moved to Canton. He also served his county as commissioner and state senator. He was engaged in the lumber business in Canton for nearly 25 years and during this time took an active part in civic betterment. In 1871 at Sycamore, IL he was married to Lovina Parker, who departed this life January 22, 1926, and whose beloved presence he sadly missed. Six children were born to them; three sons and three daughters all of whom with his grandchildren survive to mourn his loss. The children are R.P. Dean, of Rockford, IL, G Dean of Pocatello, Idaho, and E.M. Dean, of Canton, Mrs. C.H. Fitch of Hudson and Mrs. C.L. Wendt and Mrs. Ella Baker of Canton. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. H.B. Watson, of Rockford, IL and one niece, Mrs. Harry Danforth, of Genoa, IL. For more than thirty years he has been a member and leader in the local church, a class leader, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Orders. During the years 1913-14 he was department commander of the Patriarchs Militant. In his passing the home loses a devoted father, the church and lodges a consistent member and the community a fine example of American citizenship.
