OBITUARY; LOVINA PARKER DEAN Canton Farmers Newspaper Funeral services held Monday for Mrs. Dean; Passed away at her home in this city Friday; was early day pioneer. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. Edgar Dean whose death occurred suddenly at ll o'clock Friday forenoon. The last rites were conducted by Rev. J. H. Kearton, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made in Forest Hill cemetery. The banks of the city were closed during the services. Mrs. Lovina Dean, wife of Edgar Dean, passed away at her home Friday morning, January 22. Although Mrs. Dean had been in frail health for over two years, suffering from a complication of diseases, her death came somewhat as a shock to her family and her legion of friends in this community, for her indomitable will and her courage made it possible for her to engage in many of her former activities. Lovina Parker Dean was born in Perry County, Indiana, April 27, 1853; almost in her infancy, her parents moved to DeKalb Co., IL where she grew into young womanhood. In 1871, a young beautiful girl, she married Edgar Dean. In 1876 they moved to SD, which has since been their home. Her husband, six children and ten grandchildren are left to mourn her passing. The children are; Ralph P. Dean, Rockford, IL; George H. Dean, Marinette, Wis; Mrs. C. H. Fitch, Hudson, SD, Mrs. C. L. Wendt, Mrs Ella Baker and E. M. Dean, all of Canton. She also leaves one sister, Ella Stark, of Canton, SD, Three brothers; Mr James Parker, Beresford, SD, Mr. C. W. Parker, Genoa, IL and Mr. Frank Parker, Kingston, IL. One sister, Laura Kinkner, of Beresford passed away in 1917. Mrs. Dean, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church since early childhood, was a consistent, sincere Christian, her faith and daily christian living was an inspiration to those around her, and meant much to her when her health declined. She endured the hardships of the early pioneer in SD, but to those early pioneer days, as in her later life, she added much to the community, for she possessed an unusually bright intellect, a charm of manner, and a rare sympathy; she always kept abreast of the topics of the day, and in a kindly sympathetic way, was never too busy to help the afflicted or distressed either in advice or in a more material way. She was also of a very hospitable nature, and loved to have relatives and friends gather in her home; she surely was a loving wife, mother neighbor and friend, and she will be sadly missed.
