Vance Eckman was born January 16, 1908 in Pawnee City, the second son of H. G. and Eleanor Eckman. Vance attended Pawnee and Lincoln grade schools, later graduating from Pawnee City High School in 1927. Vance attended the University of Nebraska where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He and Daisymae Thompson of Lincoln, were married November 8, 1930, moving to Pawnee City in March of 1931. Vance was employed at the Landy Clark Lumber Company for 16 years. He owned and operated the Midway Cafe, with a two year interruption for service ibn the Army. The past 22 years, before his retirement in 1972, were spent as an examiner for the State Auditor's Office. His father and mother preceded him in death. His mother passed away when Vance was but two years old. He is survived by his wife, Daisymae; two sons and their wives, Gayle and Tolu of Crete, Nebr., and Ned and Janice of Lincoln; one brother and his wife, Jim and Eva of Salt Lake City, Utah; 9 grandchildren who were very special people in Vance's life; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews; and a host of friends who will miss Vance's passing. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 21 at the Wherry Brother Mortuary at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. T. J. Fraser officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Byford Metzger and Mrs. John Wherry who sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" accompanied by Mrs. Ross Thiemann at the organ. Pallbearers were Joe Heineman, William Price, Terry Harlow, Ervin Smutz, Roger Sandusky and Al Porr. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Fink, Carl Martin, Homer Johnson, Ray Benson, Maurice Van Horne, David Herries, George Marshall, Harry Sheely, Mel Nesport, John Dominy, Francis Walls, Clyde McKee, Elmer Witle, William Colwell and Everett Neill. Flower attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Buman and Mr. and Mrs. Don Walker. Interment was in the Pawnee City cemetery.
