RALPH and EDITH SPEIRS By Delila Tompkins Edith Leadbetter, niece of Will Leadbetter, and Ralph Waldo Speirs were married on the Leadbetter farm in hand County, January 12, 1916 and took a train to North Dakota to visit her folks before settling on the Will Speirs farm near Virgil, South Dakota. Edith had been a professional seamstress so one of her prized possessions was her Montgomery Ward sewing machine. During the course of their married life they moved several times, even homesteading on some land west of the river, living on the will Leadbetter farm for several years, and living in Ree Heights, St. Lawrence and finally back to Miller. After moving back to Miller they turned their home into a nursing home for the aged. For several years it was known as the Speirs Nursing Home. To this union 12 children were born and all but one are still living at the time of this writing. Delila married Elden Tompkins and lives at Highmore. Waldo married Doris Stevens and owned and operated a drug store in Milbank until his death in March of 1956. Mary Alice united in marriage to Donald Downing and they lived on a farm north of St. Lawrence until they sold out and bought the Laundromat in Miller. Leonard, our plumber, married Lorraine Crosby a they now make their home out of Hill City after living a good many years in Miller. After the war Blanche and Hugh McClelan moved to Marienville, Pennsylvania, where they have lived ever since. Florence and Kenneth Phillips farmed for a while around Miller and then moved to Lead and Kenneth has been with the Homestake mines ever since, besides running a camper sale business. Glen also joined them at Lead and Gladys and family joined him and made their home there. Dorothy married Leonard Fawcett and has lived in Green Valley ever since, even building two new homes due to ire. Kenneth and pat Onderceck have always made their home I Miller and now own and operate CalFay Fashions. Keith served in the service as did Waldo and Kenneth. After coming back Keith married Geraldine Smith and has lived in Miller working for Boldt Construction. Willis went to Pennsylvania where Blanche lived and he married Audrey Kerns after working for the Job Corps for several years at various locations. He has moved to New Jersey ad is a business manager at a hospital. Harriett, the last of the dozen, married Bob Brandhagen. After his death in an airplane accident, she married Lester Kopplin, and presently lives in Miller. Edith and Ralph quietly celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on January 16, 1966. He was in the hospital and died a few days later. Edith continued to live in her home even after losing most of her sight. Due to surgery for cancer she moved in with her daughter and stayed there until she passed away in the Miller hospital on December 18 at the age of 78.
