Holman Cowherd in charge. Speirs died January 17 at Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for a week. He had been in poor health for several years and had become seriously ill shortly before Christmas. Ralph Waldo Speirs, son of John and Mary Speirs, was born in Keokuk County, Iowa, November 21, 1893. He moved to South Dakota with his parents in 1903. He attended State Agricultural College at Brookings for two years. He was united in marriage January 12, 1916 to Edith Leadbetter at the home of her uncle, Will Leadbetter near Ree Heights. The early part of their married life was spent farming, first near Virgil and later on the Will Leadbetter farm. The family moved to Miller in 1933 where he spent the remainder f his life working at the carpenter trade with his sons until he retired due to failing health. Mr. and Mrs. Speirs celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary January 12 very quietly at the hospital. He was a member of First Methodist Church and at one time was an active Fireman. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Leonard, Custer, Glen, Lead, Kenneth and Keith, Miller and Willis, Marienville, Pr.; six daughters, Mrs. Elden Tomkins (Deila), Highmore, Mrs. Donald Downing (Mary Alice), St. Lawrence, Mrs. Hugh McClellan (Blanche), Marienville, Pa., Mrs. Kenneth Phillips (Florence), Lead, Mrs. Leonard Fawcett (Dorothy), Ree Heights and Mrs. Lester Kopplin (Harriet), Miller; 48 grandchildren seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ralph Wagnor, Agar and two brothers, Carl, Ree Heights and Raymond, San Juan, Texas. He was preceded in death by one son, Waldo Arthur; three sisters, Nellie Speirs, Mrs. Will Sutton (Norah) and Mrs. August Beiner (Edith) and one brother, Clarence. Out of town relatives and friends were present from Clovis, N.M., Luverne, N.D., Pelican Rapids, Minn., Hedrick, Iowa, Marienville, Pa., Ree Heights, Highmore, St. Lawrence, Huron, Rapid City, Lemmon, McIntosh, Agar, Lead, Custer, Aberdeen and Milbank. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tom Dodds provided links to parents. 8-3-2016
