OBITUARY: Edith King Edith Matilda King, the daughter of John and Dora (Patrick) Rhodes, was born at Broken Bow, Nebraska, on May 28, 1898, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, on August 22, 1995, at the age of 97 years, 2 months, and 24 days. She grew up and attended school at Ansley, Nebraska, and graduated from Ansley High School. She attended the University of Nebraska and received her teacher's certificate. On January 8, 1921, she was united in marriage to Edmund King at Grand Island, Nebraska. At the time of her marriage she had taught in the Merna Schools for three years. From 1921, to 1928, they lived in Aurora, Sawyer, Colon, and Exeter, where her husband was employed as manager of the Elevator and Lumber Yard. For the next 17 years, they farmed near Berwyn and south of Ansley. During that time she taught in Custer County schools for fifteen years. In 1945, they moved to Aurora where they have since resided. Edmund preceded her in death on December 23, 1970. On July 29, 1972, she married John King. They continued to reside in Aurora, and in 1985, Edith entered the Memorial Community Care, at the Memorial Hospital in Aurora. John joined her there in 1988. Edith was employed in Aurora by the Hamilton County Welfare Office as a case worker, and before her retirement she worked at Anne's Fashion Shop. She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, and was active in the teaching circles of the church. She was also a member of the Lester S. Harter Post #42, of the Aurora American Legion Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for many years. She was a past president of the Business & Professional Womens's Club, past president of the World War 1 Barracks, was a member of the Auxiliary of the Aurora Hospital and Hamilton Manor, and had served as a pink lady at the hospital for many years. Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edmund; 4 brothers, Ross, Roy, Rosco, and John "Choppy" Rhodes; 3 sisters, Kizzie Clay, Belle Hanley and Maude McKenzie; 3 grandchildren and one great grand son. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her husband John of Aurora; 3 daughters, Betty Garwood and her husband Doyle of Aurora, Donna Mason and her husband Maynard of Grand Island, and Roma Dee Lundquist and her husband Oscar of Aurora; 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.
