EDITH SOPHIA SHOBERG STRATFORD - Mrs. Edith Sophia Shoberg, 87, longtime Stratford resident died Saturday at the Boone County Hospital where she had been a patient since Jan. 6. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford with the Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating. Burial will be in the Hardin Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, when the body will be taken to the church. Survivors include one son, Carlos Shoberg of Stratford, two daughters, Mrs. LeRoy (Wilma) Carnell and Mrs. Marvin (Pauline) Peterson, both of Stratford; one sister, Mrs. Floyd (Mabel) Hill of Emmetsburg; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hilda Hagstrom of Chicago and Mrs. Dena Hagstrom of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, her parents, five brothers, four sisters and four great-grandchildren. She was born May 18, 1887 in Östergötland, Sweden, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Oscar Hagstrom. On Feb. 23, 1905, she was married to John William Shoberg at Fort Dodge. She had been a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford and active in church groups. Daily Freeman Journal June 29, 1970 Stratford resident, 83, busy with her hobbies Mrs. Edith Shoberg STRATFORD - Retirement for some means sitting in a rocking chair with folded arms, but not for Mrs. Edith Shoberg, who recently observed her 83rd birthday. She still pursues her many hobbies, which include baking rye bread, sewing, quilting, and gardening. She has a garden this summer at her granddaughter's as she now lives in an apartment over the local bank. Mrs. Shoberg was born in Östergötland, Sweden, May 18, 1887, the daughter of F.O. Hagstrom and Johanna Pearson Hagstrom. Her father came to the United States in 1888 and in 1890 her mother, with four children, Carl, Carrie, Ellen and Edith, came to the United States to make their home. Edith was about three and one-half years of age at this time. As a young girl she lived with her parents in Hardin Township, Webster County, attending country school at two different schools southwest of Stratford. On Feb. 23, 1905, she was married to J.W. Shoberg and they established their home on a farm adjoining the Izaak Walton Park about three and one half miles southwest of town. They were the parents of four children, Carlos, Ruby, Wilma and Pauline, three of whom are still living. In the fall of 1925 they moved into town. Mr. Shoberg died in November 1961, after which Edith maintained their home by the park until retiring in 1965, moving to her present apartment over the bank. Mrs. Shoberg worked for 40 years for several employers, including Charlie Franksain, Elmer Swanson, Ralph Freese, A.F. Duecker, and Everett Anderson, all in the same business place on Main street. She has always been active in church activities and the American Legion Auxiliary. "Open House" was held recently for her on her birthday at the Legion Hall, with 93 guests registered from Ringsted, Minburn, Des Moines, Wallingsford, Graettinger, Emmettsburg, Stanhope, Dayton, Fort Dodge, Humboldt, Webster City, Stratford and Johnston, by her son Charles. She received gifts and cards from friends unable to attend and also flowers from Mr. and Mrs. Dale Mann and family and Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Carlstedt and family of Tucson, Arizona, grandchildren who were not present. The Farmer's Savings Bank also remembered her with a plant. A corsage of white carnations and three yellow roses, representing her three living children was presented her at this occasion, by her grandchildren. Guests were served lunch from a table covered with white and overlayed with green net, having white candles in silver holders on either side. Yellow napkins, green and yellow mints were a part of the table decorations. Mrs. Roy (Wilma) Carnell poured coffee from the silver service and Mrs. Marvin (Pauline) Peterson served the punch.
