Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2004, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Edmund S. Poppe was born June 21, 1926, the son of Edmund A. and Wilhelmina (Sievers) Poppe. He attended the rural Keasling School and graduated from Nashua High School in 1943. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, and was currently a member of Cross Lutheran in Charles City. On February 12, 1950, he was united in marriage to Alma Hemmerich of Greene at the Vilmar Lutheran Church. To this union was born seven children: Calvin, Sharon, Glen, Gary, Beverly, Joanne and Roy Poppe. Ed started farming in 1947 northeast of Nashua, and together with his wife, moved onto the farm east of Nashua in 1951. He owned a chopper and custom filled silos for the neighbors. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, served on the FS Board of Directors in New Hampton, the Chickasaw County Cattlemen's Board of Directors and the Chickasaw County Pork Producers. He was a lifelong supporter of 4H and a member of the Moose Lodge in Charles City. He retired from farming in 1988. Ed always loved to go to a dance. He met his wife at a dance, and they hosted dances for their 25th, 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries. In 1986, the couple moved to their current home on Chickasaw Street in Nashua. There he enjoyed giving pontoon boat rides and tending black raspberry bushes. Ed enjoyed his grandchildren and he taught them all to go fishing. He is survived by his wife, Alma; four sons: Calvin (Nancy) Poppe of Ionia, Glen Poppe of Nashua, Gary (Rhonda) Poppe of Ionia and Roy (Ayse) Poppe with the United States Air Force; three daughters: Sharon (Ken) Pinter of Mundelein, Ill., Beverly (Jim) Haeflinger of Alta Vista, and Joanne (Larry) Tupper of Ionia; two brothers: Wilbur (Yvonne) Poppe of Denton, Texas and Harold (Audrey) Poppe of Decorah; five sisters: Caroline Menken of Greene, Lydia Dingfelder of Rochester, Minn., Wilma (Garland) Morse of Decorah, Myrtle Poppe of Yacapia, Cal., and Melba (Dalton) Compton of Wichita, Kan.; one aunt, Leona Groen of Clarksville; 16 grandchildren: Allen, Neal and Craig Poppe; Angelyn and Dylana Pinter; Griffin, Kelsey and Abigail Poppe; Mindy, Brian, Jason and David Haeflinger; Jennifer, Stephanie, Michael and Katherine Tupper. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law: George Ellis, George Menken and Vincent Dingfelder. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Homes in Nashua is in charge of arrangements.
