This home stood below the bluff and was one of the few to withstand the flood of 1881. Edna was educated in the Vermillion Public Schools and was 9 years old when the great Missouri River Flood of '81' struck. When all was over, the town of Vermillion was destroyed and the family moved back to the farm north of Vermillion. Edna finished her schooling then went on to attend the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. In 1910-11, she joined with her brother, George, and worked in the Red Front Variety Store. When George died in 1913, the store was sold to E. C. Wirth and Edna continued to work there as it was now called the "BeeHive" Variety Store. She later worked at the McVicker Dry Goods Store and finally at the Meisenholder Department Store as a clerk and dry goods saleswoman. Edna lived with her mother, Emily, in a house on Cottage Street that they had purchased shortly after the flood from Charley and Clara Kimball, Edna's sister. It was here that Edna and Emily raised Lyman, her nephew, after his mother, Libby, died. Edna was the church clerk for the First Baptist Church of Vermillion for many years until she fell and broke her hip after which she was paralized for the rest of her life. She was made an honorary church clerk of the Baptist Church after her accident. Edna was cared for at the home on Cottage Street until she was moved to the Dakota Nursing Home near the Dakota Hospital in Vermillion where she died. Services were held in the First Baptist Church presided over by Reverend Eugene Todd. She was buried in the family plot in the Bluff View Cemetery.
