Funeral services will be conducted from theNelson-Harris Funeral Home Friday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 A.M. with the Pastor Dixon Powers of the Presbyterian Church in Orleans officiating. Interment will be in the Bainbridge Cemetery in Harlan County. She was born Oct. 6, 1920 in Atlanta, the seventh of 10 children of Sidney and Myrtle (Johnston) Borden. The family lived in Atlanta until 1930 when they moved to Holdrege. She graduated from Holdrege Public Schools in 1938 and was active in band and chorus in junior high and high school. She took two years of normal training and did practice teaching in a small school north of Holdrege. She played on Mrs. Skoog's professional women's basketball and softball teams while in high school. On May 4, 1940 she married Albert "Dan" Vandyke. They spent the first two years of their marriage on a dairy farm in Missouri before returning to Holdrege where their three children: Stephen, Gloria and Dan were born. They lived in Holdrege and on a farm south of Holdrege until her husband's death in 1983. She continued to reside at their home in Holdrege until 1995, when she moved to Methodist Memorial Homes. Mrs. VanDyke was employed as a secretary and sewing instructor at Singer Sewing Machine Company, cashier at Safeway, cook and waitress at Bauer's Cafe and floater and inspector at Becton Dickinson. Mrs. VanDyke was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher at the Presbyterian Church in Holdrege. She also sang in the church choir. She was a 4-H, Campfire Girls and Cub Scout leader. She was active in the Eagles, American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries in Holdrege and was elected district president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was also in the Holdrege Senior Center Band and Chorus and played electronic keyboard with the group. She was an active supporter of all Holdrege athletic teams and a fan of Big Red football and basketball. She is survived by her two sons: Steve Bruce VanDyke and his wife, Michele of Crete and Danny Ross VanDyke and his wife, Elizabeth Jean of Benkelman, NE.; her daughter, Gloria Melbye and her husband, Ron of Waverly; eight grandchildren: Deborah Reiss and her husband, Paul; Kelly Dodd and her husband, Thad; Steve Morgan VanDyke, Michael Melbye and his wife, Darcy; Jennifer, Rebecca, Melissa and Christopher VanDyke; five great grandchildren; a brother, Buell Borden and his wife, Elizabeth of Long Beach, CA; two sisters: Ada Steel and her husband, Carl and Carol Binns all of Holdrege; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Albert in March of 1983, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers.
