Benson Dennis Dies After Long Illness In Hospital in Baltimore E. Benson Dennis, prominent Crisfield business man, passed away at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore at 8.30 o'clock last Wednesday evening, aged 58 years. Mr. Dennis had been suffering with cancer of the jaw and throat for more than a year, although at first it was thought that his trouble consisted of a stubborn infection of a gland, which would eventually respond to treatment. Several months ago, however, specialists discovered the true nature of his trouble and revealed the facts to his family. He was sent to Union Memorial Hospital for treatment about three months ago, when it was found that the end was nearing and that there was no hope for his recovery. Members of his family stayed by his bedside from that time until he passed away Wednesday night. Mr. Dennis was a son of the late L.E.P. Dennis and Rebecca Benson Dennis and had occupied a position of prominence in the public, social, business and religious life of the community since his boyhood. After graduating in engineering, he became associated with his father in the fish oil and fertilizer manufacturing business under the firm name of L.E.P. Dennis & Son, operating a big plant on Janes Island, at the mouth of Crisfield harbor. He continued in this business until the time of his death, the firm consisting of Mr. Dennis and his brother-in-law, Wm. M. Wooster, since the death of the elder Mr. Dennis several years ago. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Immanuel M.E. church, and treasurer of that body; a Director of the Bank of Crisfield, of the Del-Mar-Va Association, Del-Mar-Va Mortgage Co., a Trustee of Goucher College, Baltimore; and a member of a the Board of Visitors of Washington College, Chestertown. Mr. Dennis was also a Member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147, A.F. & A.M., Thomas J. Shyrock Commandry of Knights Templars, and of the Kedive Shrine. He was also a prominent member of the Rotary Club, and had served one term as a member of the municipal government of Crisfield. The remains were brought to his home in Crisfield, and funeral services will be held from Immanuel M.E. Church at 2.30 o'clock, this (Saturday) afternoon. The Masonic order will be in charge of the services. Mr. Dennis is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mabel Riggin Dennis and three children: E. Benson "Ben" Dennis, Jr., of New York, Mrs. Wm. J. Hannah of Montgomery, Alabama, and Lemuel Francis Dennis of Crisfield. Two sisters: Mrs. James H. Sterling and Mrs. Wm. M. Wooster, also survive. The deceased was one of Somerset county's foremost citizens, and was prominently identified with the business and public affairs of the Eastern Shore. A gentleman of friendly disposition, of sterling character and high ideals, he merited and enjoyed the confidence and respect of the public.
