Tucker, known to his family and friends as "Gene," died July 31, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was undergoing treatment and looking forward to returning to Pagosa Springs. Gene was born July 22, 1926, in Wichita, Kan., to Otis W. and Jennie Dugan Tucker. In 1941, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Walter C. Wann, a destroyer escort. He participated in a number of naval engagements including the battle of Okinawa. While in the Navy, he also won the gold gloves for light weight boxing. After discharge, he completed college and in 1950 was drafted into the Navy for the Korean conflict. After the war, Gene and his family moved to Liberal, Kan., where his businesses included Tucker Truck and Trailer, 4-U Laundry and 4-U Trailer Park. He was vice president of Blakemore Brothers Building Company, and was president and owner of the First National Bank. He was active in the community and held many offices with the Knights of Columbus and the Chamber of Commerce, including president of the Pancake Day, and was given credit for naming Highway 54 in Liberal, as Pancake Boulevard. Moving to Pagosa Springs in 1975, he became a real estate broker, owning and operating the Land Grant Realty Company on Put Hill. He became very active in community affairs, serving on the Pagosa Springs Water and Sewage District board, was president of Rotary and became an avid golf player. Gene was known for his friendliness, generosity and love of people. He will be missed by his many friends and his two daughters, Taran and Tanice; grandson William T.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Colorado, Kansas, Oregon and California. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, William H. Goetz, in June, 2007. A rosary will be given at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 and a Memorial Mass 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jim Koenigsfeld as Celebrant. Military Honors will be by the American Legion Post 108. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Ruby Sisson Memorial Library, P.O. Box 849, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.
