Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Elloree, with the Rev. Doctor Clark McCrary officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clay Weeks. Burial will follow in the Santee Baptist Cemetery, Highway No. 6. Mr. Gasque was born April 16, 1930, in Elloree, the son of Mattie May Parler Gasque and Edward Everett Gasque Sr. He graduated from Elloree High School and Wofford College, class of 1951, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduating from Wofford College, Mr. Gasque entered the family business with his father. One of his greatest passions was the family farm, which he developed and was involved with, along with his children until his death. Mr. Gasque was always involved in his town and the entire area, contributing in countless ways. As a Christian, he was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Elloree, and he always had a keen interest in the life and fellowship of the church. Mr. Gasque served the church in numerous capacities. In the past, he had been Chairman of the Board of Deacons several times. At the time of his death, he served as a Deacon and in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry. His heart was in the church, and he worked tirelessly on its behalf. An outstanding community leader, Mr. Gasque impacted the life of Orangeburg County, pouring his time and talents into countless endeavors. After his father's death in 1954, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Elloree, where he served 38 years. After the Bank of Elloree merged with the First National Bank of Orangeburg, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of that bank, which today is the SCBT. His board bank service totaled 49 years. Mr. Gasque was the owner of the Elloree Gin Company, one of Elloree's oldest businesses. Through the Elloree Gin, the town of Elloree was enhanced through his generosity. Mr. Gasque had always been a supporter of the Orangeburg Regional Hospital and served as a hospital trustee for 19 years. He served before, during and after the completion of the Regional Medical Center. In 1998 while becoming semi-retired, he became involved in the development of the Elloree Heritage Museum, serving on the Board of Trustees since its inception. He was the co-chairman of the museum's building committee and was a consultant on many museum projects. Mr. Gasque had been a commissioner of the Elloree Water Commission since 2003 and in the past, served on the Elloree Town Council. A member of the Elloree Lions Club, at the time of his death, he was a three time president and served 56 years. He was the longest serving Lion in the club. A dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he is survived by his beloved wife, Jean, whom he married in 1963; a son, Hugh (Pat) McLaurin III; daughters, Kathryn (Clay) Weeks, Jeanie (Wylie) Fox, Susan (Glenn) Batson and Laura (Bill) Spiers; grandchildren, Hugh and John McLaurin, Rachel (Eddie) Miller, Renee (Ryan) Fowler, Clayton (Anna Margaret) Weeks, Rhett Weeks, Laurin (Brett) Evans, Everett Fox, Kathryn Fox, Laura, Glenn, Emma and Kathryn Ann Batson, Ashley, Will and Mary Crosby Spiers; great-grandsons, Alex and Stuart Miller, Lowndes Weeks and Luke Fowler.
