Jefferson Bee - Tuesday, July 17, 1934 - It was with a decided shock that the people of Coon Rapids on the morning of July 4 heard the news of the sudden passing of Edward McDonald, president of the First State Bank and one of its most prominent citizens. The following story of the life of this man who held a leading place in the life of the community for more than half a century was written by a friend who has been closely associated with the deceased for many years and is thus qualified to tell his life history. Wednesday marked the passing on one of Coon Rapids most valuable and highly respected citizens, Edward McDonald, whose sudden death has been a severe shock to the entire community. Mr. McDonald was in his usual health and jovial good nature Tuesday and attended to ail his duties as president of the First State Bank and enjoyed a very pleasant evening with friends at his home, and it was only 2:15 a.m. when he was seized with a severe heart attack which proved fatal. His untimely passing will be deeply felt by everyone, young and old. Edward McDonald was born on a farm in Guthrie county, February 17, 1862, and passed away at his home July 4, 1934, at the age of 72 years 5 months and 17 days. His early life was engaged in farming. February 15, 1885, he was united in marriage to Bridget Glenn. To this union were born four children, but the fond parents enjoyed their love and tenderness only a few short years when they were all taken from them, three dying within four days of scarlet fever and black diphtheria. Blanche passed away at the age of 9 months, Earl age 7 years, Colette 5 years, and Jennie 2 1/2 years. In the spring of 1896 Mr. and Mrs. McDonald moved from their farm to Coon Rapids, engaging extensively in stock business and later in the grocery business. March 1919, he purchased controlling interest in the First National Bank of which he had been vice-president 10 years prior, and at this time entered the bank as president and was serving in this capacity at the time of his death. In 1907 and 1908 he was chosen representative of the 32nd and 33rd general assembly, serving two consecutive terms and it was during this time he brought in the bill of the Two Cent Stamp Act. A. B. Cummins being governor 32nd assembly and N.E. Kendall for 33rd. He was, without question, the outstanding democrat in the community and it was only through his untiring efforts that numberless projects were secured for Coon Rapids. Through his charitable nature, many young students received their education and there was never a time he was too busy to work for the progress and advancement of his little city where he had resided 37 years. He cherished greatly his library which consisted of many hundred volumes of priceless books and was an ardent reader and student. Mr. McDonald was a charter member of the Charles Carroll Council No. 780, Knights of Columbus, instituted August 16, 1903, being a Fourth Degree member and only two years prior was awarded his 25 year button at a banquet and reception tendered in his honor. He was a true Catholic and member of the Holy Name Society. Besides his wife numberless relatives and a host of friends mourn his loss. His parents, two sisters and four brothers have preceded him in death, he being the last of his immediate family. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. at the Annunciation church.
