They were the parents of Thomas, Albert, Eva Mae, and a daughter who died in infancy (born June 22, 1882). Jefferson Bee - Wednesday, October 8, 1924 - Thomas D. McDonald was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 24, 1850, and passed away at his home in Des Moines, Iowa, Sunday, Sept. 21, 1924. Thomas was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McDonald and one of the earliest settlers of Guthrie county, coming with his parents from Pennsylvania to Des Moines when a small child. They lived there for several years, his father doing day labor on the capitol building to maintain the family. From Des Moines they moved to Highland township, Guthrie county, making the trip in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. They built a log cabin near Coon Rapids where they lived a number of years until they built another home a few miles from this on the prairie. Thomas lived here until he became of age, then he rented a piece of land and started farming for himself. A year or two later he purchased a farm near his father's home and began the double task of breaking the prairie and attempting to raise enough crop to pay the interest on his mortgaged land, also doing his own cooking and laundry work, putting in 18 hours or more of labor a day. In 1881 he was united in marriage to Mary M. Reeves. To this union were born four children: an infant daughter, Bert McDonald, Mrs. Mae McDonald Murrane, of Bayard; and Thomas McDonald Jr. He is survived by his wife and two children, the eldest and youngest child having preceded him to the Better Land; and two brothers: Edward, of Coon Rapids, Michael, of New Orleans; and two sisters: Mrs. J.W. Holden, of Scranton and Mrs. Michael Caraher, of Bayard. Thomas McDonald lived on this farm about seventeen years, then moved to Bayard where he resided about thirty years. In 1920 he moved to his late home in Des Moines. Thomas McDonald was a self made man, with high morals and strictly honest. He was a loving husband and kind father. His was of a cheerful disposition and he always had a smile and jolly greeting for everyone, and was much loved by the children of his neighborhood. The funeral services were held from St. Patrick's church of Bayard, Tuesday with Rev. Father Appelby celebrating the mass. The pall bearers were his six nephews: Edward and Pete Caraher, of Bayard, Ira, Roscoe and Charles Holden, of Scranton and John McDonald, of Chicago.
