Stoner: Edward Newton Stoner was the sixth child, and the fourth son, of a family of seven. Unfortunately, his father John Bolander Stoner died when "Eddie" was eleven years old. Eventually the family had to sell the place they lived – the homestead farm of his grandfather Casper Stoner – and young Edward, along with his mother, Evaline Day Stoner, and younger brother, Daniel, moved in with his Uncle Daniel Stoner's (Find A Grave Memorial# 12083829)big family on their farm northwest of Mt. Comfort, Indiana. He and his brother earned their keep by doing farm work with his Uncle Daniel, but had no chance of inheritance, little education, and no prospects when he approached a time when he was expected to go out on his own. When Edward married Clara in 1891, it seemed probable that someday she would inherit some land they could call their own since both her father and her mother's father were large landowners. However, while she may have inherited a small amount of cash, she received no land. The lands belonging to both her father and her grandfather were left to male heirs. Her father Martin Van Buren Collins had two sons, John and Joseph. Her grandfather Joseph Squire Wright's son Isom inherited most of the land portion of his estate. Edward and Clara opened a general store in Mt. Comfort, but that business failed after a few years. After that, Edward went to work in the shipping and receiving department of the Atlas Engine works in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, Edward and Clara were raising a large family--five boys and three girls were born, but two of the girls died young. When they were in their mid-forties, Edward and Clara lived on and worked a piece of a larger farm owned by her bachelor uncle, Isom Wright, which was inherited from her grandfather Joseph 'Squire' Wright. The family story goes that Uncle Isom promised Edward that he and Clara would inherit the land they worked when he died, but a battle between the Methodists (Edward, a strong Methodist) and the Masons (Isom, a strong Mason, who resented the Methodists preaching against the rituals of the Masons) was the cause of them not inheriting the land they were promised. It was evidently a surprise and a huge blow to Edward when Isom's Will was read, and he realized he would never own a place of his own. On the eve of the Great Depression, Edward and Clara were left with no land they could call their own. In the Spring of 1936 during the height of the Great Depression, at age 69, Edward stayed up all night nursing a sick friend and walked home in the rain. He developed a chill and a fever that worsened to a fatal pneumonia. According to his son Willie, Edward was a mild-mannered man who claimed he had lost his temper only once in his life. It happened while he was milking a cantankerous cow who kept kicking over the milk bucket. In angry frustration, he picked up the milk stool and threw it at the cow. This broke the cow's leg, which meant she had to be destroyed. Willie said his father learned a lesson from that and never lost his temper again. He was a likeable, mild-mannered man whose pictures show twinkling eyes and a nice smile underneath his gray mustache. ******************************************************* The following, entitled "A Tribute by the Family", was written and delivered at the funeral of Edward Newton Stoner by his eldest son Rev. Victor E. Stoner, longtime and devout Methodist minister. Just as the day was beginning to dawn on the morning of June 7, 1936, Edward Newton Stoner found the glories of the eternal morning breaking for his Spirit as he answered the summons to join the ranks of the redeemed of the Lord. He was born April 29, 1867, near Oaklandon, Indiana to John and Evaline Day Stoner, the sixth of seven children who lived to maturity. He lived 69 years, 1 month and 28 days. While yet a young lad his home was broken by the death of his father. Opportunities for educational advantages had been few, yet he availed himself of every opportunity to secure the fundamentals for meeting life's daily problems by attending the old Baker and Bolander Schools. He worked upon the farm and in the timbers, hewing his way for a more complete life. He attended Sunday School and Church in Oaklandon. February 5, 1891 he was married to Clarissa Collins of Mt. Comfort. After a few months in his mother's home, they established their own home. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are still living. Elizabeth Marie and Margaret Evalyn died in infancy. Two years ago he moved to McCordsville. Except for ten years spent in Indianapolis, most of his married life was spent on the farm in the Mt. Comfort Community. When a young man he was converted. Entering into a fuller Christian experience, he became devoted to the Church and its various activities, holding official positions and engaging in its responsibilities. Together with his companion he sought to make his home a happy and joyous place. He enjoyed his family and desired the best for his children and their homes and families. He was a loving and devoted husband and a good father, and he gave his best unstintingly and sacrificially for their welfare. He leaves to miss his accustomed presence his constant and faithful wife of over 45 years, Clarissa, one daughter Estella Eastes of Mt. Comfort, Victor of Eaton, Indiana, Virgil and Horace of Indianapolis, and Leonard and Willie of McCordsville; two brothers Jonathon of Mt. Comfort and Daniel of Gosport, Indiana, one sister Mrs. Artie Hoss of Lyons, Indiana and relatives and friends without number. He was a good husband and father. His speech was clean and his habits pure. He knew his God. He was not only religious abroad but took his place beside the mother of his children at the family altar and thanks was returned for every meal. Since "the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom" he could say as the wise men of old "I have taught thee in the way of wisdom and led thee in the paths of righteousness." He stood fearlessly for the right and valiantly for justice. He was never impatient or unkind and always loyal and true. Such a companion and father is our inspiration. We part with him today but will meet him in that glad day when we hear the clear call to come. ******************************************************* Written by Sue Stoner Evans, daughter of William Stoner, youngest child of Edward Newton: My father, who was only twenty-three when his father died, would get tears of love and affection in his eyes when he spoke of his father Edward. Three grandsons', including my brother's, middle names are Edward in honor of their grandfather. By my father's account, my grandfather was the epitome of what I've always thought of as the quintessential Stoner personality....fun-loving, friendly, smiling, optimistic, and easy-going. Since he died before my brother Ron, sister Derith, and I were born, we never knew him, only our father's remembrances of what a kind and wonderful man he was.
