Her mother died when she was only eight. For several years after that she lived with her maternal grandparents, "Squire" Joseph Wright and Elizabeth Stevens Wright, who were both in their mid-sixties at the time. Her two younger brothers went to live with other neighboring relatives. Her father Van Collins didn't remarry until much later in life, so when she was a teenager, my grandmother moved back to her father's house and spent eight or nine years as cook and housekeeper for him and her two brothers before marrying Edward Stoner when she was twenty-two and subsequently bearing eight children, two of which died at a young age. She was forty-five when her last child was born. (See bio of her husband Edward Newton for a description of their married lives.) When her husband Edward died, poor and without land of their own, in the middle of the Great Depression, Clara was nearing her seventies. For a few years she lived in a small apartment in McCordsville, Indiana before moving into the home of her daughter Stella and husband Allen Eastes in Mt. Comfort and living with them until she died. Clara was diabetic and became an invalid requiring regular insulin shots in her later years. Grandson Ron writes "She was a large, soft woman who often mailed me sugar cookies and gave me 50-cent pieces when we visited."
