He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1968, and served in the Naval Reserve until 1979. He was a former quartermaster for VFW Post 264 in Onawa and was a member of the Eagles Lodge. Survivors include his mother, Elma Rowland of Onawa; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Larry (Connie) Reed of Onawa; a stepson, Ronnie Sanders of Whiting; four brothers, Charles of Sioux City, Richard and Robert, both of Denver, and Norman of Craig, Colo.; seven sisters, Mrs. Francis (Shirley) Pembrook of Hartington, Neb., Mrs. Dwayne (Phyllis) Mesenbrink, Mrs. Raymond (Jane) Fletcher, Miss Ella Rowland and Mrs. Kenneth (Violet) Burgess, all of Onawa, Mrs. Don (Minnie) Bean of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Ms. Mary Ann Lawson of Vineta, Okla., and six grandchildren.
