Avery and Ruth Coleman Avery was born near Akron, in Summit County, Ohio, April 6, 1836, and died at his home in Palacios, Texas March 2, 1923, aged 86 years, 10 months and 24 day. At the age of 15 years he moved with his widowed mother to Vermillion County, Ill., where he was married on the 14th day of October, 1858 to Miss Julia A. Stark of Donville, Ill. To this union seven children were born, four dying in infancy. Mrs. Avery died on April 6, 1876. Myron died September 12, 1908. Stanton Avery of Sabetha and Millie Gaibraith of Oakland, Calif. are the surviving children. Mr. Avery and wife emigrated to Kansas soon after their marriage, arriving at Walnut Creek, Brown County, in November 1856, where they lived five years; moving from there to Nemaha Township, Nemaha County, where they lived for five years. Then they moved to the Avery farm three miles west of Sabetha in May, 1869. Mr. Avery was a charter member of the First M. E. Church of Sabetha. He was a Kansas State Militia man during the Civil War and took part in Price's raid. He moved to Sabetha from the farm to the house on the corner east of the hospital, living there several years. The he moved to Palacios, Texas where he has since resided. In the passing away of old citizens of Sabetha none has been learned of with greater regret than Edwin Avery, who remains stead-fastly in the affections of his old friends, despite his absence of several years. Mr. Avery's death occurred in Palacios, the Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico, where he has made his home for several years. Mr. Avery had become attached to Palacios. So much so that before his death he made an outright gift to the town of the entire Pentecostal Church, of which he was a member. He bought the church for $1,200 and gave it to the church members. The church is a rare gift. Mr. Avery was a pioneer of Sabetha, and his name, before leaving Sabetha was familiar toHerald readers. He was a good story teller and recalled many interesting tales of his boyhood here. When the Editors of The Herald wrote "The History of Nemaha County ," they often required the assistance of Mr. Avery, together with other old citizens. Mr. Avery was very reliable. In the history is this reference: : Mr. Avery's recollections are always remarkably correct, and it is dollars to doughnuts that no corrections will be made to his anecdotes." Mr. Avery is the last of the settlers who came to Nemaha County in 1858. He remembered that the first child born in Nemaha County was Molly Key, daughter of Greenbury. Mr. Avery recalled who the daughters of Mr. Key married, and could unravel this first family tree that was started in Nemaha County. ************************************************************************************ Son of James Christopher Avery (b.1809) and Ruth C (Coleman) Avery (b.1817). His paternal grandparents were James Avery and Mercy (Baker) Avery (1787-1869). He married, first, on Oct 7,1858 at Georgetown,IL, Julia Ann Stark. Together they had seven children. He married, second, on Oct. 24, 1877, at St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, Emily Jane Williams. There was one child by this marriage, daughter Bessie (Avery) Lewis (1878-1911). (Contributor: R. By the first wife, Julia,he leaves two children, Edwin S. Avery, Sabetha and Mrs. Millie Perkins-Galbraith of Oakland, California.; and two grandchildren Margaret and Maragin Lewis, the children of a deceased daughter. The second wife was divorced. There was one child whose where-abouts was not known. The third wife was Mrs. Susan Ashton and they had no children together. The fourth wife was deceased, leaving no issue.
