Gardner, 62, died of a heart attack Wednesday at his home in Woodacre. In addition to his career in fire fighting, he was a well known real estate broker in Woodacre and was long associated with water management in the San Geronimo Valley, where he was superintendent for the Marin Municipal Water District at the time of his death. A third generation Marin County resident, he was the grandson of Edwin Gardner, pioneer settler who came to CA in 1848 and later made his home in San Rafael. Gardner was educated at San Rafael High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and University of California. In 1924, he joined the Tamalpais Forest Fire District, of which his father was chief from 1917 to 1935. The younger Gardner was chief warden of the district from 1935 to 1941, when the Marin County Fire Department was formed and absorbed the district. Gardner served as the new department's first chief for 6 months, retiring in 1941. An expert in water problems as well as fire fighting, Gardner in 1924 also joined the old San Geronimo Valley Water Co. remaining as superintendent when the MMWD absorbed it in 1954. As a real estate broker, he helped operate the Gardner Real Estate Co. in Woodacre, founded by his late father and still run by his mother, Maud S. Gardner. He was a member of the Marin Rod and Gun Club, Woodacre Improvement Club, and Marin County Real Estate Board. He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son Edwin B. Gardner of Novato; his mother; a sister, Beryl E. Lane of Sunnyvale, and 3 grandchildren. Contributor: Marin County Genealogical Society (48462800)
