Lenfest. Edwin G. Stiles was born in Underhill, Vermont, August 14, 1827, and died in Fairmont, Nebraska, February 28, 1900; aged 72 years, 4 months and 28 days. His father, Stephen Stiles was a member of the old Troy conference, hence, his early life was subject to the frequent changes and vicissitudes incident to the Methodist ministry of those pioneer days. Opportunities for liberal culture were sadly interfered with or denied altogether, but notwithstanding, that at the age of 17 he was a teacher in the public schools and from that time till 50 years of age, was identified with educational interests of the community in which he lived. Twenty years of this service was rendered in Winnebago county, Illinois, he at one time being Superintendent of Public Instruction in that county. When a young man, he came to Illinois to the above named county, where on April 13, 1854, he was married to Charlotte E. Goddard. Shortly after, they returned east. Remaining there a few years, they again came to Illinois and made it their home till 1879, when they removed to Fairmont, Nebraska, where he peacefully closed a long and successful life. At the age of nine, he entered the service of the Master, joining the church on probation. Some years of fitful service followed, but at 21, a renewed consecration marked a new era in his religious history, and the remaining years of life were used to the praise of the name of Jesus. He filled many important positions of trust in the church; for many years he held the office of class leader or Sunday school superintendent, or both and at the time of his death, was the honored president of the board of trustees of the church. The desire of his early life was a college education, but that never came; yet such were his natural endowments, improved by study, that he was always able to render satisfactory service in whatever position the providence of God placed him. His twenty year of life in your midst need no comment of mine, a comparative stranger, to cause you to place a higher estimate upon them. They are known to you and with what ever fault or infirmity or excellence you may have noted, they are left to your charitable judgment, remembering that our fellowmen will some day perform a like service for us. Five children entered the home; four have preceded to the Better Land, one son and the widowed wife remain to mourn his loss. Memorial services for the late E.G.
