Description	:	Son of Thomas Nesmith Hughes and Mary Ann (Cummings). By 1870 Edwin had gone to Fair Haven Illinois, had a wife Lucinda (Prescott) and daughter Carrie who had been born there. Edwin was farming and owned a property. The family then moved to Harvey (Smith) Kansas and had a farm there. They had another child, Charles Lincoln Hughes born 1873 in Laconia, NH. His brother WC Hughes, wife Henrietta and children were also in Kansas with Edwin and family in 1880. His brother Willie had consumption and died a few years after. Lucinda Aurilla Prescott Hughes was born Oct 1, 1878 in Holderness NH, married Edwin L. Hughes of Ashland NH. They married in Rock Creek, Illinois about 1869 and later moved to Colorado; chilldren Carrie Nesmith Hughes born June 1891 and Charles born in Colorado. (Family Records of branches of the Hanaford, Thompson, Huckins, Prescott, Smith and Neal Families, page 39) By 1895 Edwin had moved to Rapids, Linn County, Iowa and remained there 10 yrs. In the 1900 census he was in Kenwood age 52, born April 1848 NH, married 31 yrs. Lucinda was 50, born Oct 1848 and had given birth to two children, one of whom was living Charles age 27 born April 1873. He was then working as a commercial traveler (salesman) and son Charles was a dairy farmer. Edwin died in 1917-1918 and Lucinda died in 1923 or 1924. I could not find an actual death record for either one. Edwin died either in Colorado or on his return to New Hampshire. Death record for son Charles shows died in Texas 1950 and was buried there. From Carroll County, Illinois Biographies, 1899: Edwin L. Hughes was born in Grafton County NH April 5, 1848 to Thomas N. and Mary (Cummings) Hughes, the former born in Windham NH. Edwin attended New Hampton College two years and then came to (Illinois) this State and located a farm in Fair Haven where he married Feb 23, 1870 Miss Lucinda Prescott daughter of John and Lucinda (Webster) Prescott, natives of Grafton County NH. In 1870 Edwin moved to Western Kansas and then returned to Illinois, setting in Salem then moving to Lanark where he engaged in the stationery business until 1887 when he took up farming. His farm comprised 212 acres and he made a speciality of live-stock. Two children, Carrie and Charlie. Note: Edwin also has a stone in Holly Cemetery Colorado. This may be a memorial in Ashland.
