He married, on March 21, 1872 in Holderness, Elizabeth Addie Shepard. In July 1896, the Hughes family moved into their new home which was located in an area known as Millionaire's Row. Mr. Hughes was born in Groton, Mass. December 1845, but soon moved to Holderness. He worked as a clerk at a local hosiery manufacturer. Here he worked for several years for two shillings a day, boarding at home. The Civil War was being fought and being a patriotic citizen he enlisted in Co. E. of the Twelfth New Hampshire. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, being injured in the latter. After the war he headed west to Illinois and returned to Ashland in 1871, entering into partnership with his former employer under the name of Hughes and Shepard, a dry goods retailer of some renown. He married Elizabeth Addie and had one son named Elmer. On the Holderness Town Honor Roll: Francis M. Hughes, Frank L. Hughes, *George K. Hughes. In 1898 Ashland appropriated 2000 for a Soldiers Monument. The site chosen, was the Town Hall grounds. Ashland contributed 83 men to the union in the Civil War, one man for every ten persons in town. The O.W. Keyes Post G.A.R donated $200 and the Women's Relief Corps raised $300. Colonel T.P. Cheney, Frank L. Hughes, and Edward P. Warner were appointed committee in charge. The monument is of Concord granite with bronze tablets on four sides. There is a bronze statue seven feet high at the top of a soldier at parade rest. About ten days before the dedication, a special Town Meeting was held. Some of the citizens decided that the monument should be on Main Street. A drinking fountain at the juncture of Main, Thompson, and Mill Streets had to be moved. James O. Clark and his horse moved the monument intact. The Town Hall houses the Town Office, Selectmen's Room and the Police Station. At one time there were classrooms on the second floor. Everyone was shocked on Tuesday morning to hear that Frank L. Hughes had passed to the great beyond during the previous night, and many were the exclamations of sorrow. Mr. Hughes had been sick about three weeks, but only Monday afternoon was out riding, and passed a short time at his store. A heart trouble is supposed to have been the cause of his death. His early education was received in the district schools of Holderness and the New Hampshire conference seminary at Northfield, now Tilton. When very young, Mr. Hughes began to mount the ladder of success by beginning at the very lowest ground. He first entered the employ of Pepper & Greenleaf, hosiery manufacturers, and worked for several years, receiving two shillings a day and boarding at home. During the Civil War he was one of the first to enlist in Company E, 12th New Hampshire volunteers, and took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At the latter battle he was severely wounded by a fragment of shell, which confined him to the hospital for several months. Upon his discharge he returned home and entered the employ of A.B. and E.L. Shepard, as a clerk in their general store, remaining there about two weeks, after which he went to Woburn to work in a store. He was at one time employed by Webster, Russell & Company of Plymouth. Going West, Mr. Hughes found employment in Dixon, Illinois, and in a scale factory at Moline, Illinois. In 1871 he returned to Ashland, bought out the store of John Smith, Jr., and entered into a partnership with one of his former employers under the firm name of Hughes & Shepard. This partnership lasted two years, after which James F Huckins was admitted in place of Mr. Shepard, and the firm name changed to Hughes & Huckins. From 1887 to 1889 Mr. Hughes conducted the business alone, taking Ora A. Brown as a partner in the latter year and changing the firm name to Hughes & Brown, which is the name today. In politics Mr. Hughes was a staunch republican, and as such served as Treasurer of Ashland for twelve years; Representative to the Legislature one term, 1897-98; treasurer of Grafton County four years, and for six years was one of the State Fish & Game Commissioners. He was a Freemason, both of the Blue lodge of Ashland and the Chapter of Plymouth; and was a member of O.W. Keyes post, No. 35, G.A.R. of which he was quartermaster at the time of his death. He had filled all the offices in the local post, and had served on the staff of both the state and national commanders. Mr. Hughes was one of the most popular and well known men in the surrounding town and country, and as he met us, was the genial, kindly companion. His was a most familiar figure about the store with which he had been associated for so many years, and there are many others with ourselves that will miss the cheery "Hello Boy," that he was wont to greet us with. >The Ashland Citizen, August 8, 1903, p2.
