Description	:	Edwin Oster, 103, of Hazen, ND died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at his home. Edwin was born on September 11, 1913 south of Hazen to Benjamin and Lydia (Frank) Oster. He attended Hazen Public School through the eighth grade. Except for a one-year stint during the drought years of the 1930s, Edwin spent his entire life farming and ranching on the family farm south of Hazen that his father established. Read More	Edwin Oster, 103, of Hazen, ND died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at his home. Edwin was born on September 11, 1913 south of Hazen to Benjamin and Lydia (Frank) Oster. He attended Hazen Public School through the eighth grade. Except for a one-year stint during the drought years of the 1930s, Edwin spent his entire life farming and ranching on the family farm south of Hazen that his father established. Edwin married Freda Mattheis on June 18, 1939 at Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, ND and the couple raised three children, Sharold, Shirley and Glenn on the farm. They also raised Karen Mattheis as one of their own when she lost her mother at six months of age. Edwin lost Freda in 1985 and remarried two more times, first to Agnes Goetz and later to Tillie Wiedrich, both of whom have passed away. Edwin was actively involved in the development of Hazen, as was his father before him. Just as his father had sold land to establish the town, Edwin later sold land that was involved in the development of North Star I and North Star II. He was a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church and since the age of 97, has been the oldest member of the congregation. Edwin was also very active with the Senior Citizens Center, enjoyed bowling and was a local league bowler well into his retirement, was a member of The Germans from Russia Heritage Society and a very faithful Minnesota Twins fan. He also enjoyed traveling and playing checkers with his great-grandkids. Edwin’s oldest brother Herman told a story about how when Edwin was three years old he had diphtheria and the family sent for the doctor. After examining him, the doctor told the family there was nothing he could do and the family should keep him comfortable and prepare for his death. Obviously he survived and Herman said, “He has never been sick since”. Edwin is survived by his children, Sharold (Darlene) Oster of Hazen, Shirley (Allen) Elhardt of West Salem, WI and Glenn Oster of Hazen; one niece, Karen Mattheis of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, David (Carrie) Oster of Renton, WA, Laura (Cash) Oster-Aaland of Christine, ND, Mary (Brian) Brooks of St. Paul, MN, Mark (Shelly) Elhardt of Bismarck, ND, Sandy (Jim) Ziemer of Cashton, WI and Paul (Tammi) of Charlotte, NC; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Richard (Janet) Mattheis of Tuscon, AZ; one sister-in-law, Tillie Goetz of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Freda, Agnes and Tillie; one grandson, Andre Oster; three brothers, Otto, Paul and Herman; one sister, Natalie; and infant twin siblings.
