The headstone inscription uses 1871 for the birth year, while the Fairfield Daily Ledger obituary used August 16, 1873. Combining the birth month/day/year into August 16, 1871 is a compromise at best. There are no birth records from prior to 1880 in Iowa to consult. It is certainly possible that the info used in the obituary was in error, or the headstone inscription was done in error. ----------------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Wednesday, October 25, 1944 Pg. 2 Col. 7 EDWIN HUFF PASSES AWAY Edwin Scott HUFF, 71, passed away this morning at the Jefferson county hospital following a brief illness with a heavy cold resulting in pneumonia and complications. Mr. HUFF was the grandson of Jefferson county's first white settler, John HUFF, who came to this country in the fall of 1835. Edwin HUFF was born in Jefferson county on August 16, 1873, the son of James and Susan HUFF. He had lived his entire life in this vicinity, and for the past 25 years had made his home with Ralph H. and Mary Stever, route 4, Fairfield. Mr. HUFF was never married. Surviving are two brothers, Elmer HUFF, Poplar Bluffs, Mo., and John HUFF, Aberdeen, Washington. The body was taken to the Hoskins funeral home. Arrangements for services are incomplete as yet.
