Description	:	Eileen Rose Fitzgerald was born October 2, 1923 at home in Mayfield Twp Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Nell Christopher and Mike Fitzgerald. She grew up in Mayfield and attended country school, Irene high school and graduated from Scotland in 1940. She studied two years at Mount Marty in Yankton and received a teaching certificate. Read More	Eileen Rose Fitzgerald was born October 2, 1923 at home in Mayfield Twp Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Nell Christopher and Mike Fitzgerald. She grew up in Mayfield and attended country school, Irene high school and graduated from Scotland in 1940. She studied two years at Mount Marty in Yankton and received a teaching certificate. She taught at country schools in the Mayfield area and one year at Wakonda. Eileen married James W. Donahue of Wakonda June 25, 1947. James, who always called Eileen “Fitz” died April 10, 2011. They lived and farmed east of Wakonda and raised six children. She always had a large garden, many chickens and her children remember her delicious homemade bread. Eileen was blessed as a child with the gift of music and taught herself to play piano by ear. She sang on WNAX Yankton radio at age six. She studied voice and spent a summer singing opera on WGN radio in Chicago. Her children will remember that she was always vocalizing or playing the piano at home or lining up gigs for them to sing in the 1960s. The Donahue singers recorded a record in 1964 at Mount Marty College. She played organ at St Patrick’s in Wakonda for many years and taught congregational singing, religion classes and was a member of the Altar Society. She was in the musicals for the Wakonda celebrations of Jubilee in 1960 and Centennial in 1985. She would often entertain at area nursing homes on St. Patrick’s Day. She loved to read, sing, play piano, talk politics, religion, history and was proud of her Irish heritage from Counties Waterford and Kildare. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Claire, Roy, Kenneth and infant Harold Fitzgerald, two sisters Veronica Freimuth and Colette Kehrwald and a grandson, Kevin Koenig.
