Description	:	Elbert B. Bates, eldest son of Ephriam and Margaret Bates, was born in the town of Rome, Lenawee County, Mich., January 19th, 1855, and passed away at his farm home Sept. 7, 1938, age 83 years. He was united in marriage to Alice L. Ashley, of Windsor Township, October 18th, 1878. Their union was blessed with three children, Pearl Rogers, of Eaton Rapids Township, Lee Bates, of Dimondale, and Agnes Connick, of Lansing. Bates, eldest son of Ephriam and Margaret Bates, was born in the town of Rome, Lenawee County, Mich., January 19th, 1855, and passed away at his farm home Sept. 7, 1938, age 83 years. He was united in marriage to Alice L. Ashley, of Windsor Township, October 18th, 1878. Their union was blessed with three children, Pearl Rogers, of Eaton Rapids Township, Lee Bates, of Dimondale, and Agnes Connick, of Lansing. He was engaged in the grocery business in Dimondale a few years but the greater part of his life was spent on the farm. He leaves to mourn his loss the widow, three children, fourteen grandchildren, one granddaughter Mary Rogers preceding him in death, three great grandchildren, one brother, Frank Bates, of Windsor, several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing. He was a kind indulgent father, a highly respected citizen, and a loyal neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed in the community where he has so long resided. Funeral services were held at the home of his son, Lee, in Dimondale, Rev. Lloyd Meade, of Lansing, officiating. Burial in Dimondale cemetery.
