Eldon was baptized February 3, 1935 and confirmed May 2, 1948 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial School through the eighth grade; graduating from Elk Creek High School in 1952. As a young boy, Eldon helped his dad farm. Eldon participated in 4-H, developing his love for cattle at an early age. When health issues rendered Ernest unable to actively farm, Eldon’s uncle, Gus Peters, assisted in farming the home place. Eldon worked with Uncle Gus to keep the family farm going. After graduation, Eldon started full time farming on the family farm. Horses were originally used to farm the land. In 1952, Eldon’s dad, Ernest, assisted Eldon in purchasing his first tractor. In the early days, Eldon cleaned off the timberland surrounding the farm to make way for and expand the farm. Eldon developed a love for cleaning timber and cutting trees. His passion for being a caretaker of God’s creation remained throughout his lifetime. Eldon possessed an undying love for “God and Country.” He served in the Naval Reserves (U.S. Naval Air Station-Lincoln, NE) for eight years, (1952-1960). On April 17, 1959, Eldon and Esther (Lintz) were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. They made their home on the farm where Eldon was raised and where his great-grandparents had originally settled when they immigrated from Germany. Three children, Kathy, Kim and Mike were born to the union. All three children were raised on the family farm, actively assisting in maintaining the livestock and the dryland farming operation until each graduated from high school and moved on to further their educations with college degrees. In the 1960’s Eldon owned a few head of dairy cattle which the family utilized for milk production. They raised chickens for egg production, and also started a cow/calf herd. At one time, he operated a small hog farrow-to-finish operation, which gave the kids “chores” to keep them busy after school and on weekends. In addition to farming, Eldon operated a custom hay-baling operation. He initially utilized a square baler for the operation, but later purchased a large round baler, since finding help/labor was difficult. On a personal level, Eldon found a lifetime of enjoyment in being able to “cut trees,” go camping with the family, and “go fishing.” Eldon and Esther loved to dance, play cards and socialize with family and friends. He had an undying passion and talent for colorfully recounting a lifetime of stories and memories. People loved to listen to his animated versions of life as he recalled it. Eldon served on several church boards. While a member of St. Peter’s, he served on the Finance Committee, Stewardship Committee, and as an Elder on the Church Council, also serving on the St. Peter’s Parochial School Board and the School Board for Elk Creek Public School. In 1995, Eldon and Esther transferred their membership to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, NE. The couple served on the St. John’s Memorial Committee for a number of years. Eldon and Esther moved to Tecumseh in 2013, during a time that Eldon was battling cancer. Eldon and Esther were blessed with 61 years of marriage. He peacefully passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, after a recent diagnosis of Lung Cancer. Eldon passed away on the 151st Anniversary of the Purchase of the Buethe Family Farm. The farm has been in the Buethe family for four generations. Eldon was 85 years old at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife, Esther of Tecumseh, NE. His children, Kathy Butler and husband Neil of Lincoln; Neil’s daughter, Susan Pinkerman, and her husband David; Great-grandchildren, Miriya and Aiden Pinkerman; Kim Whitehead and husband Rod “Joe” of Lincoln; Grand-daughter, Nicole, and her husband, Aaron Bloemer; Great-granddaughter, Delaney Bloemer, (with another Bloemer great-grandchild on the way); Mike Buethe and wife Linda of Tecumseh; Linda’s son, Andy Wellensiek; Eldon’s sister, Donna Zimmer of Denver, CO, Sister-in-law, Mildred “Millie” Buethe of Round Rock, TX; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marge Farley; Tony and Sharon Lintz; Dorothy Woltemath Scoles; Beverly and Alan Forrest; nieces, nephews, cousins, many relatives and friends. “Peanut,” Eldon’s 8-yr old (mini-pin) dog will dearly miss her constant companion. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Laura Buethe; brothers, Milton Buethe and wife Anne; Kenneth Buethe; brother-in-law, Del Zimmer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, rural Elk Creek, Nebraska with Rev. Marcel Kohlmeyer officiating. The service will be radio broadcast on FM 88.7 for those choosing to stay in their vehicles and also live streamed on the Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page. Masks and social distancing will be encouraged. Visitation will be held at from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Memorials in lieu of flowers may go to the family’s choice or the Johnson County Museum. Interment will be in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Elk Creek, Nebraska will full military rites by the Tracy-Bates American Legion Post #370 of Elk Creek.
